  Hmm... it could be the changes I made to minimize the size of the
VALUE_PAIR structure.  The previous code made certain... odd...
assumptions that may no longer be true.  I may have missed one or two
places where it still does something odd.

  Maybe reverting change b14fc9d3d9781186 might help.

  If so, I'll have to take a deeper look at the changes.
