Accessing openssl.cnf in a non-standard place

Hello,

Is it possible though configuration, or failing that by source
modification, to change the path for openssl.cnf?

The system I'm building for (SmartOS) installs all extra packages under
/opt/local. So I see several "WARNING: can't open config file:
/etc/openssl/openssl.cnf" on startup.

Thanks,
