Revert "add prototypes"

This reverts commit 1a789072c2c5ab77e74ba08ed53833b064fa7fbc.

GCC complains there's no function prototype.  And if you add one,
complains about duplicate definition.

leave it un-prototyped until such time as we figure out WTF is
wrong with GCC
