compiling 1.1.6 on solaris problem

Setting up 1.1.6 on a Sun with `uname -a` giving

SunOS sunfire 5.10 Generic_118822-26 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-30

configure does not show errors, only warnings. Unfortunately make dies  
with:
