I wonder if the Perl DBI/DBD drivers are consistent in this respect; 
certainly in other languages it can be a real pig to distinguish between 
server-side "query fail" and "other" (I'm looking at you, earlier 
versions of libpq!)

But yes, this kind of approach is probably best.
