But which value to leave? Is it incorrect to assume that both packages 
need this macro defined exactlty when compiling the two together?

openldap defines it as:

    #define LITTLE_ENDIAN   1234    /* LSB first: i386, vax */

For Freeradius-1.1.7 this is:

    #define LITTLE_ENDIAN 1
