I have tried using the sqlcmd tool; no such behaviour, as below.

Anybody got a suggestion for something else I can use to test the
driver?

# sqlcmd -D -S BOGUS -U user -P password
Sqlcmd: Error: Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server : Data source 
name not found and no default driver specified.

# sqlcmd -D -S REALSERVER -U user -P password
