  Then... why is the server dying?

  a) There is another client defined somewhere other than clients.conf
  b) there's a bug in the server

  Either way, tracking down the root cause of the problem involves some
serious debugging work on the running system.  I don't see the problem,
so it's a little difficult for me to see why it's broken.

  Or, you can edit the source code to remove that check, or to make the
check more robust.
