got to the bottom of this - well, sort of. thanks to some out-of-band discussion with Arran.

pull request 49 broke our server

causing a massive loopy/CPU burn each time the PERL module was called......

I have 'reverted' this patch (by taking out the changes and changing
paircopy2 and pairdelete to use the new API ) and the server now ticks
along as it used to.
