IMHO, you would be best off upgrading to FreeBSD 6.2, then upgrading
your ports to RELENG_6_2 as well.

However, either way, even if not beneficial in this case, it is always a
good thing to read /usr/ports/UPDATING prior to upgrading ports.

Also, take a look at the portupgrade port.
