Freeradius and OpenLDAP authentication with hashed passwords

I managed to get the authentication (both plaintext and sha password) 
working by setting Auth-Type LDAP { ldap } in site-enabled/default, and 
commenting everything else in the authenticate section. But this does 
not explain why only plain-text password works in earlier configuration 
settings.
