Login incorrect (Home Server says so)... - But why?

Well in this case: ask the other guy to do the test again and at the 
same time, observe your own debug log. You'll see the request coming in 
(I'm going to assume you have sorted out firewall issues in both 
directions) and why it gets rejected.
