$ export CFLAGS=-DIE_LIBTOOL_DIE
$ ./configure
$ make
Or, edit the top-level "Make.inc" after a previous "configure", and
find the CFLAGS line. Add "-DIE_LIBTOOL_DIE" to it, and it should work.
The macro name has, of course, no meaning, and doesn't demonstrate any
opinion about libtool.
