thank you for telling me. There was a slash missing in my git-archive
command. I fixed that:

git archive --format=tar --prefix=smsotpd.2012-06-04/ HEAD | bzip2 -9 > ~/.www/smsotpd.2012-06-04.tar.bz2
#                                                   ~ slash was missing
