I have setup freeradius in Azure running as a container, I'm using image latest-3.2-alpine for this. I have a self signed cert configured for the server and a root CA uploaded. On my client I have trusted certs for both the self signed certificate and the root CA. My wireless profile is configured to use the root CA. Constantly receiving this error when connection is attempted, can anyone suggest anything? eap_tls: ERROR: (TLS) Alert write:fatal:handshake failure
Without the full debug i don’t think someone can help you. But as a side note. Besides security aspects, don’t use UDP with Azure container instances or any service which is running behind a load balancer in Azure. We also saw spontaneous issues with VMs which run in Azure and use UDP when it comes to fragmentation. The loadbalancers are not able forwarding fragmented UDP (or fragmented IP packets to be more correct) and you will search for hours before you’re taking captures and wondering why not everything from the sender, arrives at your destination. But of course it depends on the authentication protocol and the server configuration whether fragmentation occurs in your situation. BR, Lineconnect

Hi, yes I've had that before and Microsoft have had to allow udp for the tenant. I'm not sure if this is related though as it's not behind a load balancer? I'm targeting the public IP of the container instance. The tail logs don't give a lot of information to be honest, is there any other way of getting better logs? Would you suggest switching to radsec? Thanks On Wed, 19 Jun 2024, 8:00 pm , <nabble@felix.world> wrote:

Switching to RadSec won't help with EAP-TLS errors. What will help is reading the documentation and doing what it says: http://wiki.freeradius.org/list-help What definitely does *not* help is saying "I couldn't see anything in the debug output, so I'm not going to post it". The documentation says to post it. So you should do that. At least in part because the people here *understand* the debug output, and perhaps can see something that you missed. So... follow the documentation and get help, or avoid the documentation and fail to make progress. It's up to you. Alan DeKok.
Hi Alan, thanks for the email. Radiusd -x isn't working on this version of Alpine Linux so all I have is the tail log. Below is what it reports when a connection attempt is made. In the meantime I will read through the help info. There's no way that happens. You can stop the server, and run it in the foreground. There's nothing magic about it. If it's "impossible" in your OS, then throw your OS in the garbage, and run an OS which works.

Posting the same thing multiple times is not useful. Failing to post the debug output is not useful. All of your messages are going to be ignored until you post the debug output. You've been told that it's critical to getting the problem solved. There is absolutely no excuse for not posting it. If some garbage OS refuses to let you run "radiusd -X" (and I don't see why that would ever be true), it should be easy to install a real OS, copy the configuration over, and run the tests there. Ubuntu VMs are free. The only thing preventing you from getting this problem solved is the refusal to follow the instructions in the documentation. And why ask questions if you have no intention of following the help we give? Alan DeKok.

Assuming you mean our latest-3.2-alpine image, then yes it works: $ docker run --rm -it freeradius/freeradius-server:latest-3.2-alpine -X FreeRADIUS Version 3.2.4 Copyright (C) 1999-2023 The FreeRADIUS server project and contributors There is NO warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE You may redistribute copies of FreeRADIUS under the terms of the GNU General Public License For more information about these matters, see the file named COPYRIGHT Starting - reading configuration files ... including dictionary file /opt/share/freeradius/dictionary ... Assuming you mean our latest-3.2-alpine image, then yes it works:

Debug mode works in the Alpine image as well, as per my last message, but whatever.

Because FreeRADIUS is already running, so you can't start a second copy at the same time. As it's in a container, stopping the initial server will probably kill the container. Either start the container at the shell, and then run FreeRADIUS in debug mode (pass "sh" or "bash" as the argument to docker) or do as I wrote last time and start it directly in debug mode (pass "-X" as the argument to docker). -- Matthew
Yes i gathered that and yes when i killall freeradius it stops the container running, I'm struggling to run any shell commands like you suggested as this is running in an Azure container instance. Okay, so i've switched the docker image im using from freeradius-server:latest-3.2-alpine to freeradius-server:latest.
Debug mode works in the Alpine image as well, as per my last message, but whatever.
Failed binding to auth address * port 1812 bound to server default: Address already in use /etc/freeradius/sites-enabled/default[59]: Error binding to port for 0.0.0.0 port 1812

Okay so im a little further, more logs. Errors mentioning no suitable cipher
It's good to make progress, but details matter. The error message isn't "no suitable cipher", which would be substantially different. The error is actually:
(1) eap_tls: (TLS) TLS - send TLS 1.3 Alert, fatal handshake_failure (1) eap_tls: ERROR: (TLS) TLS - Alert write:fatal:handshake failure (1) eap_tls: ERROR: (TLS) TLS - Server : Error in error (1) eap_tls: ERROR: (TLS) Failed reading from OpenSSL: error:0A000065:SSL routines::no suitable key share
It is absolutely critical to use the correct terms. TLS is complicated, and contains a lot of different concepts and terms. If you use the wrong ones, you are *guaranteed* to not understand the issue, and then not be able to fix it. The reason why this is happening is that you edited the default configuration, and broke it. Don't do that. Specifically, you changed the configuration from: cipher_list = "DEFAULT" to cipher_list = "ECDHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-SHA256:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-SHA256:ECDHE-RSA-AES128-SHA:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES128-SHA:DHE-RSA-AES128-GCM-SHA256:DHE-RSA-AES128-SHA256:DHE-RSA-AES128-SHA:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA384:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256-SHA384:ECDHE-RSA-AES256-SHA:ECDHE-ECDSA-AES256-SHA:DHE-RSA-AES256-GCM-SHA384:DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA256:DHE-RSA-AES256-SHA:DHE-RSA-CAMELLIA256-SHA:DHE-RSA-CAMELLIA128-SHA" Change it back, and it will work. Hi Alan, I have now changed it back to cipher_list = "HIGH" and yes it's still working, believe the root cause to be ecdh_curve = "secp521r1" This was forked from elsewhere so I'm trying my best to work through the issues.
