Does anyone know if there is a built in mechanism of retaining some sort of state information between auth and acct packets without using external means?

No. If your NAS supports it, it will send the Acct-Session-ID attribute in Access and Accounting requests, which you can use to tie the information together. Else you can use the Class attribute in much the same way, you just need to populate it and record its value in the Access-Accept. -Arran
