Freeradius not using sql clients
Hi everyone, I ask for help because I'm unable to make freeeradius work with a database. Please help! I have a test environment in which i have deployed Freeradius and MariaDB on a single server, but I am not being able to get Freeradius to read it's clients from the MariaDB server. In fact, I think it's reading the clients correctly but it's not using the data it reads for some reason. I've searched the Internet but I have not found anyone with my specific issue... I have populated the database with a few records: # echo "SELECT id, nasname, shortname, type, secret, server FROM nas" | mysql -p -u radius radius Enter password: id nasname shortname type secret server 1 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 other mysecret default 2 192.168.56.101 192.168.56.101 other mysecret default But when I try to test it, the server seems not to answer the requests: # echo "User-Password=password,User-Name=test" | radclient 127.0.0.1 auth mysecret Sent Access-Request Id 243 from 0.0.0.0:46566 to 127.0.0.1:1812 length 44 Sent Access-Request Id 243 from 0.0.0.0:46566 to 127.0.0.1:1812 length 44 Sent Access-Request Id 243 from 0.0.0.0:46566 to 127.0.0.1:1812 length 44 (0) No reply from server for ID 243 socket 3
From the server side, all I get are the following messages:
Ignoring request to auth address * port 1812 bound to server default from unknown client 127.0.0.1 port 50479 proto udp What puzzles me are the following lines that appear in the startup, that make me think that freeradius is adding correctly the clients: [...] rlm_sql (sql): Adding client 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1) to default clients list rlm_sql (127.0.0.1): Client "127.0.0.1" (sql) added rlm_sql (sql): Adding client 192.168.56.101 (192.168.56.101) to default clients list rlm_sql (192.168.56.101): Client "192.168.56.101" (sql) added [...] Furthermore, radmin tells me the same: # radmin radmin version 3.0.13, built on Aug 23 2017 at 15:18:27 - FreeRADIUS Server administration tool. You may redistribute copies of FreeRADIUS under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2. radmin> show client list 127.0.0.1 192.168.56.101 But if freeradius is adding correctly the clients, why is not answering the requests? And even more, if I add the client by the means of a clients.conf file and restart the freeradius it works correctly! I am runnning Freeradius 3.0.13 and MariaDB 5.5.56 on a CentOS 7.4 # cat /etc/centos-release CentOS Linux release 7.4.1708 (Core) # radiusd -v radiusd: FreeRADIUS Version 3.0.13, for host x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu, built on Aug 23 2017 at 15:18:22 FreeRADIUS Version 3.0.13 [...] # I ask for help because I'm unable to make freeeradius work with a database.
Maybe try upgrading to 3.0.16.
But when I try to test it, the server seems not to answer the requests:
# echo "User-Password=password,User-Name=test" | radclient 127.0.0.1 auth my secret
Debug output... we don't care about "radclient" output.
Sent Access-Request Id 243 from 0.0.0.0:46566 to 127.0.0.1:1812 length 44 Sent Access-Request Id 243 from 0.0.0.0:46566 to 127.0.0.1:1812 length 44 Sent Access-Request Id 243 from 0.0.0.0:46566 to 127.0.0.1:1812 length 44 (0) No reply from server for ID 243 socket 3
From the server side, all I get are the following messages:
Ignoring request to auth address * port 1812 bound to server default from unknown client 127.0.0.1 port 50479 proto udp
That's not good.
What puzzles me are the following lines that appear in the startup, that make me think that freeradius is adding correctly the clients:
[...] rlm_sql (sql): Adding client 127.0.0.1 (127.0.0.1) to default clients list rlm_sql (127.0.0.1): Client "127.0.0.1" (sql) added rlm_sql (sql): Adding client 192.168.56.101 (192.168.56.101) to default clients list rlm_sql (192.168.56.101): Client "192.168.56.101" (sql) added [...]
Yes, that shows it's loading the clients.
Furthermore, radmin tells me the same:
That's good.
But if freeradius is adding correctly the clients, why is not answering the requests? And even more, if I add the client by the means of a clients.conf file and restart the freeradius it works correctly!
I am runnning Freeradius 3.0.13 and MariaDB 5.5.56 on a CentOS 7.4
Must be an issue with 3.0.13.

Why? The FAQ explains what information we need. I just don't understand the desire to give all kinds of irrelevant information... especially when the documentation says what we need. Alan DeKok.
some named server or per_socket_client list interplay problem in an older version of the server - which has probably been fixed since then... have you tried with 3.0.16? (what do you actually have in your default server?) alan

Really not. I installed the freeradius package available in the official CentOS repositories. My fault, I should have tried this the first time (and probably I would have saved a lot of time). Sorry.

Thank you, Alan.
Hi Alan.

I just tried with version 3.0.16 and got the same behavior.
(what do you actually have in your default server?)
My default server is the following: server default { listen { type = auth ipv4addr = * port = 0 limit { max_connections = 16 lifetime = 0 idle_timeout = 30 } } listen { ipv4addr = * port = 0 type = acct limit { } } authorize { filter_username filter_password preprocess auth_log chap mschap suffix eap { ok = return updated = return } files sql expiration logintime pap } authenticate { Auth-Type PAP { pap } Auth-Type CHAP { chap } Auth-Type MS-CHAP { mschap } mschap eap } preacct { preprocess acct_unique suffix files } accounting { detail unix sql exec attr_filter.accounting_response } session { sql } post-auth { update { &reply: += &session-state: } sql exec remove_reply_message_if_eap Post-Auth-Type REJECT { sql attr_filter.access_reject remove_reply_message_if_eap } Post-Auth-Type Challenge { } } pre-proxy { } post-proxy { } } Do you have any idea of what am i doing wrong or where should I look for any clue? Thanks! Paco
Hi Alan,
Maybe try upgrading to 3.0.16.
Ok, I'll let you know if that was the problem.

You are right, sorry. I pasted it just because I have installed the package available in the official CentOS repositories, and if someone with the same problem reaches this thread perhaps finds useful this piece of information.
Alan DeKok.
Thank you! Best regards, Paco
