Hi. I'm having trouble setting up a rlm_ldap module. FR version is 3.0.0 Trimmed output from radiusd -X: radiusd: #### Instantiating modules #### instantiate { } modules { # Loaded module rlm_ldap # Instantiating module "ldap_xxxxxx" from file /usr/local/etc/raddb/mods-enabled/ldap_xxxxxx ldap ldap_xxxxxx { server = "ldap.example.org" port = 636 password = "whocares" identity = "someuser@example.org" user { filter = "(sAMAccountName=%{%{Stripped-User-Name}:-%{User-Name}})" scope = "sub" base_dn = "dc=example,dc=org" access_positive = yes } group { filter = "(objectClass=posixGroup)" scope = "sub" base_dn = "dc=example,dc=org" name_attribute = "cn" membership_attribute = "memberOf" cacheable_name = no cacheable_dn = no } client { scope = "sub" attribute { identifier = "host" shortname = "cn" } } profile { filter = "(&)" } options { ldap_debug = 40 chase_referrals = no rebind = yes net_timeout = 3 res_timeout = 20 srv_timelimit = 20 idle = 60 probes = 3 interval = 3 } tls { ca_file = "/usr/local/etc/raddb/certs/ca.example.org.pem" start_tls = no require_cert = "demand" } } accounting { reference = "." } post-auth { reference = "." } rlm_ldap (ldap_xxxxxx): Initialising connection pool pool { start = 4 min = 2 max = 6 spare = 2 uses = 0 lifetime = 0 cleanup_delay = 5 idle_timeout = 60 spread = no } rlm_ldap (ldap_xxxxxx): Opening additional connection (0) rlm_ldap (ldap_xxxxxx): Connecting to ldap.example.org:636 rlm_ldap (ldap_xxxxxx): Bind with someuser@example.org to ldap.example.org:636 failed: Can't contact LDAP server rlm_ldap (ldap_xxxxxx): Opening connection failed (0) rlm_ldap (ldap_xxxxxx): Removing connection pool /usr/local/etc/raddb/mods-enabled/ldap_xxxxxx[8]: Instantiation failed for module "ldap_xxxxxx" FR is able to bind with the LDAP server only if require_cert is set to "never", which makes me believe this is a certificate verification issue. I tried to do a manual connect using openssl using openssl s_client -connect ldap.example.org:636 -CAfile /usr/local/etc/raddb/certs/ca.example.org.pem -debug which shows a Verify return code: 0 (ok) Module is being called at the sites-enabled/default: authorize { .... -ldap_xxxxx .... } BTW: Why the "-" before the module name? TIA
Hi.
FR version is 3.0.0
This is already fixed in 3.0.x.
Indeed. Now it works!
BTW: Why the "-" before the module name?
Makes loading optional.
I see that now... "Conditional Modules" in README.rst I will remove the "-". Thanks. -- Alberto Martínez Setién Servicio Informático Universidad de Deusto Avda. de las Universidades, 24 48007 - Bilbao (SPAIN) Phone: +34 - 94 413 90 00 Ext 2684 Fax: +34 - 94 413 91 01

But radiusd -X is failing:
... # Skipping instantiation of ldap_yyyyy ldap ldap_yyyyy { ... }
You should only see the above entry with -C... Modules which utilise a finite pool of connections to another server should not be loaded in config check mode, as instantiation may erroneously fail due to connection limits. Confirm you saw that in the output of '-X' and not '-C'.
(0) [files] = ok (0) ERROR: ldap_yyyyy : All ldap connections are in use (0) [ldap_yyyyy] = fail (0) } # authorize = fail
No, I cannot see any reason for that, and it works fine for me and others. Please provide full debug, and confirm you experienced that issue on the first request. Arran Cudbard-Bell <a.cudbardb@freeradius.org> FreeRADIUS Development Team FD31 3077 42EC 7FCD 32FE 5EE2 56CF 27F9 30A8 CAA2
Hi Arran. Thanks for your help.
You should only see the above entry with -C...
But it happens with "radiusd -X".
Modules which utilise a finite pool of connections to another server should not be loaded in config check mode, as instantiation may erroneously fail due to connection limits.
Confirm you saw that in the output of '-X' and not '-C'.
Confirmed.

Hi Arran.
It works. It just doesn't work as expected.
Ug. sizeof(bool) != sizeof(int) on your system.
Ok, pushed a fix, nothing to do with ldap. Check config global was being declared incorrectly in some files.
Thanks for the bug report.
I have tried the master git branch and now it works nicely :) -- Alberto Martínez Setién Servicio Informático Universidad de Deusto Avda. de las Universidades, 24 48007 - Bilbao (SPAIN) Phone: +34 - 94 413 90 00 Ext 2684 Fax: +34 - 94 413 91 01

Thanks for confirming. I checked, and that's the last bool external. Globals are generally bad in a largish code base, but the problem gets much worse when declarations for them are sprinkled around multiple files. Interestingly non of the static analysis tools picked this up. Arran Cudbard-Bell <a.cudbardb@freeradius.org> FreeRADIUS Development Team FD31 3077 42EC 7FCD 32FE 5EE2 56CF 27F9 30A8 CAA2
Hi,
BTW: Why the "-" before the module name?
I'd advise to read the release notes - it means that the module is used if the requisite configuration is in place - ie the ldap module has been configured int his case. this means that all you need to do to get LDAP or SQL working is configure the module.... you dont then also need to add it to the virtual-server config...its already there and will spring into life when freeradius daemon is next loaded up. alan
