Odd behavior on authentication
Hi, I had a test client (Ubuntu 22.04) set up, and I was running tcpdump on the server (also Ubuntu, running Freeradius 3.0). I had created a username & password on the Radius server, and if I tried to log into the client with those credentials, it failed. But as soon as I created a "cut out" on the client (same username, but '*' password in the shadow file), I could log in because the server was no longer rejecting the authorization request. I don't get it. How would the server know if there was a local user or not? Nothing in the messages seems to be different, other than the things you'd expect (the message id, and the random seed that the password gets hashed with). All other parts of the message looked to be identical. How was the client conveying to the server that there wasn't a local account present? Also, I've run "pam-auth-update --enable radius" to get pam_radius_auth.so plugged into the PAM stack, but how do I integrate it into /etc/nsswitch.conf as well? This is on Ubuntu so I don't have authconfig/authselect which are RedHat only. Thanks

You're carefully avoiding the only thing which will help you find out what's going on: the debug output. *All* of the documentation says to run the server in debug mode. It's the only way to understand issues, and fix them.
Also, I've run "pam-auth-update --enable radius" to get pam_radius_auth.so plugged into the PAM stack, but how do I integrate it into /etc/nsswitch.conf as well? This is on Ubuntu so I don't have authconfig/authselect which are RedHat only.
Ask the PAM people how PAM / nsswitch.conf works. This isn't a FreeRADIUS issue. Alan DeKok.

I'm not avoiding anything. Many other lists don't like huge amounts of debug. I was trying to be respectful. Clearly this list has different expectations. That's fine. I wasn't aware.

Also, I've run "pam-auth-update --enable radius" to get pam_radius_auth.so plugged into the PAM stack, but how do I integrate it into /etc/nsswitch.conf as well? This is on Ubuntu so I don't have authconfig/authselect which are RedHat only.
Ask the PAM people how PAM / nsswitch.conf works. This isn't a FreeRADIUS issue.

When you join the list, you get an email which says POST THE DEBUG OUTPUT OR PEOPLE WILL BE MAD AT YOU. It also says similar things in the Wiki, the "man" page, etc. But apparently it needs to be in more places. Where else should we put that text so that people will read it? That's telling. It's a PAM / whatever issue. It isn't a RADIUS issue. The password is changed somewhere on the RADIUS client, before it's sent in the RADIUS packet. It's usually the PAM infrastructure which is checking one source for the password, deciding that the password is wrong, and then mangling the password for all other PAM methods. The solution is to fix the PAM system so that it relies on RADIUS, and only on RADIUS. Fixing the NSS configuration won't help. That does something different.

Discovered the following. The password being passed up comes from pam-auth.c in sshd. And if I put "ldap" into /etc/nsswitch.conf, then things work. It shouldn't be hard to refactor the nss_ldap project so that it generates two plugins, one specifically for Radius. -Philip
Off topic but just be warned, It’s possible you could make an NSS plugin but its normally not done that way because the NSS lookups sometimes ask for ‘everything’ and not just map this user or map this UID / GID. Remember ls -l uses nss to turn uid’s and gid’s to usernames 2 requests per file and may not cache hoping that the NSS layer is doing that (it doesn’t unless you use something like sssd). So, look to the NSS people for answers and good luck if you try to attempt an abnormal solution.
