User-Name return glitch in FR 3.0.17?
Right, So, this is an authentication on FreeRADIUS 3.0.17 that I've just upgraded to on our 'playpen' network. Previously, it would simply return the User-Name as 'root' (I know, I know...) but now it appears that the server adds the outer User-Name *first*, and then restores the session-state one (which was set by the inner-tunnel as 'root'). This doesn't look right... Alan? Arran? The /etc/raddb/users file looks like this: bob Cleartext-Password := <<password>> Reply-Message := 'Bob has authenticated', User-Name := 'root' -- log follows -- FreeRADIUS Version 3.0.17 Copyright There were situations where it *wouldn't* set the reply User-Name for EAP. That was fixed in 3.0.17. The debug log you posted shows no User-Name in the session-state list. Hmm... if I set the inner reply with a User-Name, and then set "use_tunneled_reply = yes", then the inner User-Name is copied to the outer one as expected. If I don't set "use_tunneled_reply", then the outer User-Name is just a copy of the one from the request, as expected. If I add a User-Name to the outer session-state list, then it's in the reply, *and* the one added by the EAP module. So that's wrong. The solution there is to have "eap" run in the post-auth section, and only add the reply User-Name there. But that's not going to change in a stable release. The solution to that would be to just remove any existing User-Name from the reply, before updating the session-state list: update reply { User-Name !* } update { &reply += &session-state: } I think that will work. But what are you expecting it to do, and when? Alan DeKok.
Hi Alan, I used the session-state filter thing in the inner-tunnel post-auth and commented out the removal of the User-Name (so it does send the User-Name back as part of the inner-tunnel reply. I can't use the 'update reply { User-Name !* }' bit because there are cases where the reply *will* contain an actual User-Name. I'll post you a Dropbox link with a series of tests regarding this. I'll re-run this on 3.0.16 as well just to check that the expected behavior is seen there. If so, I guess it'll be helpful to you to see what the edge case is? This is the problem. There are *two* User-Name attributes now. 'root' came from the inner-tunnel as expected. The User-Name of '@idp.test.assent' is unexpected.
Hmm... if I set the inner reply with a User-Name, and then set "use_tunneled_reply = yes", then the inner User-Name is copied to the outer one as expected.
use_tunneled_reply is deprecated. We're using the 'new' way, using the session-state list. I've uploaded a set of files to https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tonkqtbxloyzb8d/AAAUWbTS1xzvsnPWY9gk6KR2a?dl=0 What you'll find there is a folder called 'fr3015-3017-username-glitches', in which you have 5 runs of exactly the same authentication set (and a compressed archive of all runs): 1. A run in FR 3.0.15, all three actors (APC, IDP and RP) in the correct 'default' state: - fr3015-apclog-apc-default-rp-default-idp-default - fr3015-idplog-apc-default-rp-default-idp-default - fr3015-rplog-apc-default-rp-default-idp-default This state shows a complete successful authentication run. It returns as part of the Access-Accept from the IdP to the RP the User-Name value of 'root'. That is overwritten on the RP to 'moonshot'. To see which packets go where at what time, see the logs in the 'fr3015-with-ts' folder, which were run with the -fxxx parameter but the date (not time) and 'Debug' and 'Info' messages removed. 2. A run in FR 3.0.17, all three actors (APC, IDP and RP) in the correct 'default' state (as upgraded to from 3.0.15): - fr3017-apclog-apc-default-rp-default-idp-default - fr3017-idplog-apc-default-rp-default-idp-default - fr3017-rplog-apc-default-rp-default-idp-default Here you will only find APC and RP interacting. Because APC returns *two* User-Name attributes ('@test.assent' and the real value), the whole flow fails. 3. A run in FR 3.0.17, the APC modified, IDP and RP in 'default' state: - fr3017-apclog-apc-mod-rp-default-idp-default - fr3017-idplog-apc-mod-rp-default-idp-default - fr3017-rplog-apc-mod-rp-default-idp-default Here you will find a complete successful authentication run. The APC has been modified with the 'update reply {...}' fix in post-auth. However, IDP returns *two* User-Name attributes ('@idp.test.assent' and the value 'root'), and the RP rewrites the first to 'moonshot'. 4. A run in FR 3.0.17, the APC and RP modified, IDP in 'default' state: - fr3017-apclog-apc-mod-rp-mod-idp-default - fr3017-idplog-apc-mod-rp-mod-idp-default - fr3017-rplog-apc-mod-rp-mod-idp-default Here you will find a complete successful authentication run. The APC and RP have been modified with the 'update reply {...}' fix in post-auth. However, IDP returns *two* User-Name attributes ('@idp.test.assent' and the value 'root'), the RP deletes *all* instances of User-Name and sets one of 'moonshot'. 5. A run in FR 3.0.17, all three actors (APC, IDP and RP) modified: - fr3017-apclog-apc-mod-rp-mod-idp-mod - fr3017-idplog-apc-mod-rp-mod-idp-mod - fr3017-rplog-apc-mod-rp-mod-idp-mod Here you will find a failure again, because the IDP deletes the User-Name that is necessary for the APC to authorize a connection. The flow fails, the RP retries and eventually has to give up. What I *would* expect is to see the flow in FR 3.0.15 in FR 3.0.17. I hope this helps. Sorry, I didn't see that.
This is the problem. There are *two* User-Name attributes now. 'root' came from the inner-tunnel as expected. The User-Name of '@idp.test.assent' is unexpected.
It likely comes from the outer session, and is the anonymous identity sent in the EAP Identity packet. The issue before 3.0.17 was that it was *supposed* to add the outer request User-Name to reply:User-Name. It did, but *not* if there was also an outer request Stripped-User-Name. The fix in 3.0.17 was to always copy outer request User-Name to outer reply User-Name. I suspect your rules added User-Name to the reply when it didn't already exist. Now that it exists in 3.0.17, your rules run into issues. That's really the main issue here. The secondary issue is that you probably want the session-state attributes to over-ride the EAP module copying the request User-Name to the reply User-Name. That isn't done right now, because the EAP module adds the reply User-Name in the "authenticate" section, not in "post-auth". The fix to that is simple: post-auth { if (session-state:User-Name && reply:User-Name && request:User-Name && (reply:User-Name == request:User-Name)) { update reply { User-Name !* ANY } ... copy session-state to reply ... }
What I *would* expect is to see the flow in FR 3.0.15 in FR 3.0.17.
3.0.15 would sometimes not send a User-Name in the reply. That was wrong. It worked for you because you *manually* added a User-Name. But that shouldn't be necessary. Alan DeKok.

Well, 'my' rule is the standard rule set here: https://github.com/FreeRADIUS/freeradius-server/blob/087c8414679f75aec41f4ef... I'm using this filter, so it's set to 'if (1) {'. I just commented out line 337.
post-auth { if (session-state:User-Name && reply:User-Name && request:User-Name && (reply:User-Name == request:User-Name)) { update reply { User-Name !* ANY }
... copy session-state to reply ... }
Ok, shall I pop over a pull request to fix this in the post-auth of the 'default' and 'abfab-tr-idp' servers? Or do you want to fix this in code for 3.0.18?

Interesting. I assume that's the reply in the outer? Just clarifying here. :-) With Regards Stefan Paetow Consultant, Trust and Identity t: +44 (0)1235 822 125 gpg: 0x3FCE5142 xmpp: stefanp@jabber.dev.ja.net skype: stefan.paetow.janet jisc.ac.uk Jisc is a registered charity (number 1149740) and a company limited by guarantee which is registered in England under Company No. 5747339, VAT No. GB 197 0632 86. I'll push a fix for 3.0.18. I'd rather not do more complex unlang rules, but I'll see if it's necessary.

Groovy. I'll be happy to test this. :-)

Ok. That's definitely a bit of a departure from the defaults that've been observed in the past... That'll definitely still need an unlang filter of some sort (in case customers do not want the anonymous outer username to be returned in the Access-Accept)... Let's see what your commit does. Hi Alan, Just following up on this one... Did you ever push something that fixes this? We've tried the latest 3.0.x HEAD and it still persists. With Regards Stefan

I don't think I pushed a fix. I'm not sure that we can do a simple fix in v3 without changing existing behaviour. And I'm very wary of doing that. Since this can be worked around in "unlang", I think it's best to do it that way for now. Alan DeKok.
Alan, The existing behaviour (only one User-Name attribute) *was* changed by the code change (to always send a User-Name) that now causes this problem, so... just saying. Adding unlang may fix this for *new* installations, but all existing installations going to 3.0.18 will suddenly experience the same issue that I did originally. Those upgrading would have to do diffs (between .rpmnew and the original) to see what's changed, and that often does not happen. Either way, an upgrade *will* have an effect that is a departure from pre-3.0.17 behaviour. With Regards Stefan

The issue was that the previous code sometimes *didn't* send User-Name when it was required to do so. That's wrong.

Any bug fix is departure from previous behaviour. I'll see if there's a fix. But it will have to be done carefully. Alan DeKok.

Fair enough. :-) We'll send a PR over for the suggested unlang you posted in April. Apparently it works for all configurations we've tested (ABFAB and non-ABFAB).
