Machine authentication with client certificate to Samba DC
Dear All, I'm trying to set up my radiusd server to authenticate Windows 11 machines using their computer name and a client certificate (deployed through GPO), and then put them in a specific VLAN based on either machine name or group membership. I'm running Rocky OS and Samba as an AD (separate machines). ldapsearch is working well using the DC's certificate from the radiusd box. The plan is to have one WiFi SSID with every domain-joined laptop automatically joining it using a deployed CA and client cert and the machine credentials. If possible, it would be good to allow BYOD on the same SSID using a users AD credentials as long as they have both the CA and client cert installed. I've got the radiusd self-generated CA deployed via GPO and I've got the WiFi GPO deployed and sending out the machine name. I see the machine trying to authenticate and fail. I try with a username/password and I get my VLAN accept packet. How can I get the machine to authenticate, and how do I enforce the client certificate and install it through a GPO? I've done the CA, but the client certificate doesn't have an obvious place? Attached is the debug output from a failed machine auth session, which tells me that there is no machine password in the access request...? It all goes wrong around packet 7, lines 1962 - 1986. Thank you, Tim

How can I get the machine to authenticate, and how do I enforce the client certificate and install it through a GPO? I've done the CA, but the client certificate doesn't have an obvious place?
Looks like you have not set the machine to do certificate auth, so it is trying to do EAP-MSCHAPv2 with the computer account password. No idea about GPO, but as well as setting "computer auth" you will need to set the option to do I think "smart card or certificate" - at least it was something like that a few years back. FR is complaining that it can't get a password from AD to compare against (which you won't ever get from AD - certificates is definitely the way to go here). -- Matthew

I have tried using the 'smart card or certificate' option in the GPO, but I can't see how to specify the client cert I generated on the FR box. I've imported it just fine, but in the GPO options there is nothing (that I can see) to allow me to specify a client cert - only the CA (which I did). The laptop just complains about needing a certificate but won't let me point it to one.

Given that I can do user authentication, I thought machine authentication would work the same way. Where a machine would pass it's credentials over and FR would use them to try and bind to the Samba LDAPS interface? Are you implying that the best (most secure) way for my setup is to deploy a client cert to every device that wants to connect to the WiFi and only use that for authentication (ie no username/password or computername/password)? Would I use only one client cert for all laptops, or will I have to mess about with Windows Server and try to use templates to get the clients to generate certificates when they apply the GPO? Many thanks for your input, Tim

You don't specify a cert, you just need to put it in the correct certificate store. I don't recall which one it is, but if in doubt just try each of them until one works... You do set the CA of the RADIUS server certificate, so that bit sounds correct.

To do machine auth with passwords (PEAP/EAP-MSCHAPv2) you would need to use Samba, not LDAP. User auth / BYOD may already be working for you if you've configured EAP-TTLS/PAP, but your mschap config has no ntlm_auth or winbind config.
Are you implying that the best (most secure) way for my setup is to deploy a client cert to every device that wants to connect to the WiFi and only use that for authentication (ie no username/password or computername/password)?
Yes You can't use both in Windows anyway - it's one or the other.

Use one certificate per device. It's one of the things where Windows makes it easier, as AD will generate and maintain certs on all your Windows machines for you. (EAP-TLS is normally hard to use because of the cert management, even though arguably it's the best and fastest form of authentication.) Sharing a key/certificate is just asking for trouble. -- Matthew

I manually installed the FR client.crt file into my test laptop and 'let windows automatically place the certificate into the correct store', and it put it in 'Other People'. That store isn't available on my GPO machine, so I chose the 'Trusted People' store instead for the GPO. It turns out neither of them work anyway, so I'll have to keep trying with that.
To do machine auth with passwords (PEAP/EAP-MSCHAPv2) you would need to use Samba, not LDAP.
When you say 'use Samba', do you mean ntlm_auth back to my DC? I'm already using LDAP back to my Samba DC..

Yes, ntlm_auth back to the DC, which means installing Samba on the FR server and joining it to the domain. It doesn't matter whether the DC is Samba or AD. But if you use certificates (EAP-TLS) for "machine" auth and EAP-TTLS/PAP for "user" auth, then LDAP back to the DC will be fine.

What MS call "machine auth" is just the computer authenticating (with EAP-TLS or PEAP/EAP-MSCHAPv2) before any user has logged in. You can't (at least, I don't think it's changed) do machine auth (cert or password) and then also send some kind of username/password at the same time (e.g. you can't do PEAP at login time, send the user login credentials, but also use a client certificate). I think you can do "machine auth" at boot time, and then re-auth a second time ("user auth") when the user logs in. Both "machine auth" and "user auth" can use certificates, and both can use usernames and passwords. "Machine auth" will be (IIRC) EAP-TLS (certs) or PEAP/EAP-MSCHAPv2 (computer account password). "User auth" will be EAP-TLS (cert) or a variety of other EAP methods for username/password. So you can easily configure FR to do both EAP-TLS (handle the machine auth certificate side) and also e.g. EAP-TTLS/PAP to handle BYOD logins with username/password. To handle BYOD with e.g. PEAP/EAP-MSCHAPv2 you will need to join the RADIUS server to the domain with Samba and use ntlm_auth (in the same way as you would for machine auth with passwords) because LDAP won't give out any kind of password to compare against.
I don't have any Windows servers, and only use Samba AD with a Windows VM for GPO, so (if I follow you correctly), I would be looking at user auth (LDAP & EAP-TTLS/PAP) and machine auth (ntlm_auth? & PEAP/EAP-MSCHAPv2) on the same FR?
Yes. But I'd use certs for the machine auth, not PEAP/EAP-MSCHAPv2, if possible. As I said above, Windows won't do client certs with PEAP, so it's certificates (EAP-TLS) OR computer account password.
Thank you for your help with this - a few emails from you has been more productive that hours probing Google.
We try to help... Getting your head around all the EAP methods (and Windows / client capabilities) can take a while, especially if you're new to it. -- Matthew

Wow - thank you for the detailed explanation of it all; I think I have a better idea of how to proceed now: I really don't want to setup a Windows server for the individual client certificate generation via GPO, so I think I'll stick with machine auth via the computer account password (using my FR server as a Samba domain member and then ntlm_auth). Same for the BYOD part - username/password authentication. I have one other (at the moment!) area of confusion: A recent security audit told me that I need to use 'username/password authentication with digital certificates' for my WiFi authentication. The concern was that a rogue access point could trick an end-user device into attempting authentication and revealing a password hash. The theory is that the client device has a certificate to prove it is a trusted device. How would that work with FR? If I deploy my FR CA to the client devices along with the WiFi profile pointing to that CA, surely the client devices will only connect to legitimate APs as the certificate will match the pre-installed FR CA? Thank you, Tim

Answering my own question here (I think): This link's explanation of the PEAP protocol tells me that I if I just deploy the FR CA cert to the client machines and set the GPO to validate the WiFi connection with it, then the client shouldn't connect to any rogue AP's: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protected_Extensible_Authentication_Protocol#P... I think I'll do that tomorrow! Thank you Tim

That would be EAP-PEAP-MSCHAPv2 or EAP-TTLS. The RADIUS server sends a certificate that is signed by a CA. The OS checks that it trusts certificates signed by the CA before sending a password. The client does not need a client certificate in these modes. (FR supports having one anyway IIRC, most clients won't do that for you, though.) That's at least how it is SUPPOSED to work. But, the client has to check the DN/CN of the certificate to ensure no evil twin can steal passwords. Otherwise anyone with a stolen or even a legitimately obtained certificate issued from the same trusted CA can cause the client to initiate password authentication in its tunnel. The client has to be specifically configured to check the domain of the CN/DN, though some OSes will "pin" the certificate after the first join to the network. This behavior varies widely from client OS to client OS However, some clients make it really easy (not scary enough) for users to click through the warning windows when they detect a new certficate. Be sure to check the CN/DN "domain"... if the client has an option to see if the CN/DN "contains" a string, that is not good enough as an attacker could do yourdomain.hisdomain.tld. We rely on the CA not to issue fishy sounding certificates and only issue certificates to authorized domain owners here, unless we run our own CA, and put the root for that CA in the trust store on all our client devices. Yes this is all an utter mess. Unless we get to dictate what client OSes or supplicants are in use, we're at the mercy of client OS vendors who do not seem to care much how ugly this gets. - List info/subscribe/unsubscribe? I setup my own CA on the FR server and now I will deploy that to the clients (Win11) via GPO. I wasn't doing the CA deployment before, so all devices would throw up an 'are you sure' message before connecting. The WiFi GPO has a drop down box from which I have chosen the "tell the user if the server's identity can't be verified" option, and an option for specifying which server name to expect. It would be nice to also make the screen go red or something! Thank you, Tim

I wish we could just do that here but over in .edu we were BYOD before the pointy headed industry armchair quarterbacks even coined the term. It would probably behoove you to use the full hostname in the CN check. If it is the first non-AD CA on the network, these things have a tendency to eventually become the institutional CA for other purposes, and eventually you want to issue certificates to a subdepartment, and a bunch of certificates start flying around all of which bear your domain, so you're back to potential evil twins, this time from internal threat vectors.
