SASL AuthN to LDAP
i am trying to use a Kerberos keytab file to authenticate to LDAP. the keytab file is the same one used to authenticate users against the Kerberos database. the principal in the keytab has been mapped to an object in LDAP, for access to be granted. i dont seem to be getting the configs correct for the LDAP binds to work. can you shed light on what i am missing? i am setting KRB5_CLIENT_KTNAME = '/etc/raddb/radius.keytab' in the sasl {} stanzas in mods-available/ldap, which is linked to mods-enabled/. the radiusd -X output below indicates that anonymous binds are being attempted. this seems to indicate the keytab is not being picked up and the identity is not being found. i can run a 'kinit -kt /etc/raddb/radius.keytab' and get a TGT back. i can also run 'ldapwhoami' with that TGT and thanks, i figured it was going to be something along those lines. with systemd based OS's, you can created a directory, such as /etc/systemd/system/radiusd.d/ and put a .conf file in there to override or augment the service, but that does nothing for command line. running radiusd -X will never pick up the systemd "helper" config. is there a way have that "helper" sourced when running radiusd -X?

yea, fedora seems to have done away with the file equivalent to your EnvironmentFile (in /etc/sysconfig/). i created /etc/systemd/system/radiusd.service.d/ and added a .conf file there. i believe this is a systemd.unit file or config, and allows me to manipulate specific settings without editing the packaged service files that will be overwritten by newer packages. as for cli, i just created a script, that sets the env var, runs radiusd -X and then unsets the env var when i ctrl+c out of radiusd -X. now onto why i cant auth against Kerberos... thanks for the info brendan

The unset is not needed. Each process has its own copy of the environment - it cannot possibly modify its parent's environment. The only case this is not true is if you use "source <scriptname>" or ". <scriptname>" to read the script directly into your running shell. If you include the shebang line (e.g. #!/bin/sh), make it executable, and execute it directly, then it's a separate process.

You can override parts of packaged systemd unit files by creating a small override.conf file with the local changes. Actually for completeness: all you need to do is type systemctl edit radiusd which will throw you into an editor. There you can set e.g. [service] Environment=KRB5_CLIENT_KTNAME=/etc/radiusd.keytab and save. Under the hood, it creates /etc/systemd/system/radiusd.service.d/override.conf I presume you could set radiusd command line options there too, by overriding ExecStart. Regards, Brian.

Argh. As soon as I posted, I realised the problem: the keytab was only readable by root. There is a nasty risk though. The way I have it set up, the service principal in /etc/radiusd.keytab has special rights in the LDAP server to read the NT password hash; something which no other user has. However if I "kinit admin" so that I have an existing Kerberos ticket, and then start radiusd, it uses the existing ticket. And this means that user lookups fail: (0) Auth-Type MS-CHAP { (0) mschap: WARNING: No Cleartext-Password configured. Cannot create NT-Password (0) mschap: WARNING: No Cleartext-Password configured. Cannot create LM-Password (0) mschap: Client is using MS-CHAPv1 with NT-Password (0) mschap: ERROR: FAILED: No NT/LM-Password. Note, when using KRB5_CLIENT_KTNAME you should never acquire with 'kinit' (not even 'kinit -k). Otherwise even if the credentials were acquired for the same principal, the ticket won't get renewed when it expires. So having a distinct ccache is a good idea indeed.
