How to connect to PAP or how to use PEAP with Google LDAP?
Hello I have set up freeradius with the simple tutorial found on Google help pages about their Secure LDAP: https://support.google.com/a/answer/9089736?hl=en&ref_topic=9173976 I followed all steps, freeradius starts, I get Access-Accept responses when I use the radtest tool. Perfect! Although, when trying to connect to an AP with an Android device, I can only connect with an EAP protocol, PAP seems to be unavailable. This is a problem, as other protocols encrypt the password (TTLS + PAP) for example shows no User-Password field in the incoming request. So freeradius can't handle the request because Google really needs that unencrypted User-Password field. So, how do I connect with an Android device with the PAP protocol the server needs after following that Google tutorial, or is there a way to let Freeradius decrypt the password and pass it to Google? Thanks for any insights, I'm pretty new with this. Mathias Maes

That guide is wrong. I've filed an issue with them to fix it. But of course being google, they don't care about anyone, and they don't care to fix their mistakes.

That's good, but their instructions also have unfortunate side effects: In their instructions: 5 (b) is not necessary. It doesn't hurt, but it's not necessary. 5 (c) is also not necessary 5 (d) is wrong, and no one should ever do that.

Yes.
This is a problem, as other protocols encrypt the password (TTLS + PAP) for example shows no User-Password field in the incoming request. So freeradius can't handle the request because Google really needs that unencrypted User-Password field.
Read the debug output. There *is* a User-Password attribute, but it's only seen inside of the "inner-tunnel".
So, how do I connect with an Android device with the PAP protocol the server needs after following that Google tutorial, or is there a way to let Freeradius decrypt the password and pass it to Google?
Edit sites-enabled/inner-tunnel, and add the following text to the "authorize" section: if (User-Password) { update control { Auth-Type := ldap } } You should also read the instructions at the top of the "inner-tunnel" file. They explain how to do testing *without* using EAP / WiFi. Alan DeKok.
Thanks for your prompt response Alan. Pretty lame of Google to not update their docs! I did the changes you proposed, but if I execute radtest as stated in the inner-tunnel file: radtest -t mschap mathias.maes xxxxxxx 127.0.0.1 0 testing123 But I don't know, I have a feeling that the inner-tunnel file is not really processed in my request. Or maybe it is due to other leftover configuration. BTW, is there a way to 'reset' an installation to default config? Maybe it's better to start over and follow your instructions? I get this as log: administrator@freeradius:~$ sudo freeradius -X FreeRADIUS Version 3.0.19 Copyright (C) 1999-2019 The FreeRADIUS server project and contributors There is NO warranty; not even for I have set up freeradius with the simple tutorial found on Google help pages about their Secure LDAP: https://support.google.com/a/answer/9089736?hl=en&ref_topic=9173976
That guide is wrong. I've filed an issue with them to fix it. But of course being google, they don't care about anyone, and they don't care to fix their mistakes.
I followed all steps, freeradius starts, I get Access-Accept responses when I use the radtest tool. Perfect!
That's good, but their instructions also have unfortunate side effects:
In their instructions:
5 (b) is not necessary. It doesn't hurt, but it's not necessary.
5 (c) is also not necessary
5 (d) is wrong, and no one should ever do that.
Although, when trying to connect to an AP with an Android device, I can only connect with an EAP protocol, PAP seems to be unavailable.
Edit sites-enabled/inner-tunnel, and add the following text to the "authorize" section:
if (User-Password) { update control { Auth-Type := ldap } }
You should also read the instructions at the top of the "inner-tunnel" file. They explain how to do testing *without* using EAP / WiFi.
Alan DeKok.

Thanks for your prompt response Alan. Pretty lame of Google to not update their docs!
It's not the worst thing they've done.
I did the changes you proposed, but if I execute radtest as stated in the inner-tunnel file:
radtest -t mschap mathias.maes xxxxxxx 127.0.0.1 0 testing123
You can't do MS-CHAP to Google's LDAP server. It's impossible. You *must* do PAP. Alan DeKok.
Thanks again Alan DeKok Ok, I understand. So I tried to select TTLS -> PAP protocol on my Android device and tried to connect. I'm really unable to find the User-Password field, and freeradius doesn't seem to find it either, as I see this rule: *(1) if (User-Password) -> FALSE* Your knowledge is really helpful.

Ok, I understand. So I tried to select TTLS -> PAP protocol on my Android device and tried to connect. I'm really unable to find the User-Password field, and freeradius doesn't seem to find it either, as I see this rule: *(1) if (User-Password) -> FALSE*
That's fine, because the outer session is EAP, and doesn't contain a User-Password.

The supplicant (Android device) is supposed to send the next packet. It didn't. Find out why it stopped doing EAP. There are instructions on my web site for doing EAP testing: http://deployingradius.com Follow them first. If that works, then you know that FreeRADIUS is configured correctly. If the Android device still doesn't work, then the Android device needs to be configured correctly. Alan DeKok.
I got it working Alan. Nothing worked, also not using a laptop. After some Googling I found out it was a bug in the firmware of the AP (Unifi). Updating to the latest firmware solved the problem!
