Error sending request: No valid RADIUS responses received
I have a pfSense box with captive portal using radius authentication. I'm running freeradius on a Raspberry Pi on the LAN. This works fine and I had no issues setting up freeradius on the rPi. I now have a new Orange Pi which I want to set up the same as the Raspberry Pi. The oPi won't boot off the same image as the rPi so I had to download armbian for the oPi and reinstall everything from scratch. Using the oPi as the server, I'm getting authentication errors: "Error sending request: No valid RADIUS responses received" I've checked the following configuration files for both pis and they are identical: clients.conf radiusd.conf sql.conf users I have run the server in debug mode and run the output through the debugging tool (http://networkradius.com/freeradius-debugging/) and there are a few red lines but they are also present in my working server. both server debug outputs show this starting at line 150: radiusd: #### Loading Clients #### client localhost { ipaddr = 127.0.0.1 require_message_authenticator = no secret = "mysecret" nastype = "other" } There are differences in output but the only one I can see which might be relevant is the following which is present in my working server but absent in my non-working server at line 487: rlm_sql (sql): Read entry nasname=192.168.225.1,shortname=pfSense,secret=mysecret rlm_sql (sql): Adding client 192.168.225.1 (pfSense, server=<none>) to clients list which would seem to be a show stopper, but I can't figure out where that is going wrong. Debug output for the non-working server: freeradius: FreeRADIUS Version 2.2.5, for host arm-unknown-linux-gnueabihf, built on Oct 24 2014 at 05:52:01 Copyright (C) 1999-2013 The FreeRADIUS server project and contributors. No, that is NOT what we need. We need to see what happens when the server receives a packet. Stop the background process, and run it in debug mode. Ensure that the server receives packets. THAT debug output is useful. Alan DeKok.

Alan DeKok.
I got it working. Looking at the debug output from the working server are the lines: "rlm_sql (sql): Read entry nasname=192.168.225.1,shortname=pfSense,secret=mysecret rlm_sql (sql): Adding client 192.168.225.1 (pfSense, server=<none>) to clients list" So in the clients.conf file on the non-working server I added the lines: client 192.168.225.1 { secret = mysecret shortname = pfsense } And re-started the server, and now it works. I don't understand why these lines are absent from my working server clients.conf file and yet it works. Obviously the NAS info must be present somewhere else, but where?

You have read_clients set to "yes" in your mods-enabled/sql config, and the client listed in the "nas" table? I think you nailed it Matthew, that's the crucial difference. Thank you.
