Yeah, they are (debian packages).
Solved with the LD_PRELOAD trick as in 
http://perl.apache.org/docs/1.0/guide/troubleshooting.html#_relocation_errors__or__undefined_symbol_ 
that I never tried thinking it was unrelated. Lesson learned!
