'-' Character in Group

 When I use '-' character as Group name, the authentication fails. For example

1.
Group Name:  -A
Result         :  Aunthentication Fails

2. 
Group Name:  A-
Result         :  Authentication Successful

What are the valid character and what is the explanation regarding this?
