How to differentiate between vpn user and appliance user?

run in debug mode.....see where and how the ldap module is being called. 
for quite a few appliances a dumb 'authorize' request is made before a real
login.... you might want to tweak your server to handle such a thing (we do for
our CISCO ASA VPNs)
