Every wakeup problem I've seen talked about or in person was 802.11 driver or AP related.
Some of the time the AP manufacturer works around a chipset problem on their end before
new drivers are available with an actual fix, but that is likely to be rarer with prosumer gear than
enterprise controllers/APs, for WPA-Enterprise

You are making the right move: first test the latest Apple software.  On Apples this has
also been known to be tied to power management on the chipset, which shares Bluetooth
and some USB functions, so try with various power-draws turned off.
