Reliable, robust, feature-rich and absolutely bulletproof when configured correctly. (I had freeradius run without a hick with failed (virtual) hard disk on VM. Disk read only. Freeradius still happily served authentications without single hick.) Thanks Alan A. Thanks to all and special thank to Alan (not all heroes wear capes).
In case anyone else is struggling with error 20 at 0 depth, what I did was to run ./bootstrap in etc/raddb/certs, ensured that the certificates had been copied across to etc/freeradius/certs and then rehashed them by using the following command at root level: c_rehash /etc/freeradius/certs/
Now I need to generate actual proper certificates and not just use example ones. Wish me luck!
