FR 2.1.10 + dialup_admin Could not connect to SQL database

Followed the README and HOW TO as best I could. I think I am finally close. radiusd -X shows it connecting to sql when I tried radtest, but dialup_admin cannot connect. I have sql_debug : true and even set sqltrace = yes but it does not produce an sqltrace.sql file. There is also nothing in mysqld.log. I have been through quite a bit getting this far, nd feel like I have just overlooked something simple. Can anyone help point me in the right direction?
