The documentation for the "users" file describes how it works. It's always better to follow the documentation than to "try" a bunch of different things. The "unlang" documentation says it can do casting and IP address comparisons, so that works. The "users" file documentation doesn't say that it can do casting and IP address comparisons. :( Alan DeKok.
