I guess you could do something like the following?
grep -r "safe_char" /path/to/your/raddb/*
or if it does happen to be included (it's not here) then post the complete failed debug output so we've got some sort of clue about your setup/config and what might be wrong. Safe characters really depends on which modules you are using; it's mostly for sql.
