My question is: Is this to be expected? Does a failure in SQL somehow override the entry in the users file?
Most likely.
Do you know or are you guessing? I do want to get SQL working, but on the principle that I should change a little at a time, I don't really want to start trying to do that if there is something fundamental I've missed. There is another reason that I want to know. I was planning to leave a couple of critical users in the users file as a sort of backup, so they could still log in even if the SQL server dies or is unreachable or whatever.
