If MSCHAP attributes exist, use for AuthN, otherwise, force Kerberos? Also, gracefully accepting @domain in username?
FreeRADIUS users, Vitals first - radiusd: FreeRADIUS Version 3.0.20 Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS (x64) I have a FreeRADIUS server that is "joined" to a FreeIPA domain/realm. The intent is to use FreeRADIUS to allow FreeIPA accounts to have access to various pieces of network infrastructure (routers, switches, P2P wireless hardware). I originally wanted to have all RADIUS authN requests happen via Kerberos. Then I discovered that some of my network gear (Mikrotik routers) only want to do MSCHAP, and do *not* send "User-Password" back to radiusd. Due to this, I had to jump through hoops with FreeIPA to set up CHAP/NT secrets on user accounts, and configure an LDAP account that can read the CHAP secrets and compare them to what's coming from the NAS. Using a mostly out-of-box configuration (just changes to the LDAP module to make LDAP work, and a line to point at the NT password hash in LDAP), I can MSCHAP authN using radtest as well as an actual piece of network equipment as the NAS. Output from radiusd -X of two different authNs (same account, which is in LDAP/FreeIPA) is at the bottom of this message. Obviously, this means I can't use Kerberos everywhere, because MSCHAP verification isn't a User-Password attribute (which Kerberos requires). However, I'd still like to use Kerberos for anything that *does* send User-Password, instead of reading NTHash out of LDAP. I believe I have the Kerberos configuration fully functional - if I set DEFAULT Auth-Type := Kerberos in the "users" file (which is a symlink to mods-config/files/authorize, at least on Ubuntu), I can then run radtest against the server, and I am able to get Access-Accept back from radiusd, and I can see the Kerberos authN process happen in the debug output from radiusd. I have a working Kerberos service ticket configured on the server, etc. I'll post output of a functional Kerberos auth at the end of my message too. When I set "DEFAULT Auth-Type := Kerberos" in the "users" / "authorize" file, this then (obviously) breaks *other* types of authN (and I saw in the "default" site config that it is not recommended to set a default Auth-Type!) So, I want to use MSCHAP hash checking if that's what the NAS is sending, but I want to use Kerberos if the NAS is sending User-Password. I'm not sure which file(s) I should be editing and what magic lines I need to make this sort of logic happen. I read up on unlang a bit, but when I tried putting what I thought was a basic unlang statement into "users", radiusd got angry and wouldn't start. I'm thinking maybe I need an "if" or two in the "authorize { }" section of the "site" config (I'm just using a copy of the "default" site), but some of the documentation explicitly says NOT to put unlang into that stanza, so I got confused and came here. *Second problem*, and this is relatively minor: I want to be able to accept both a "bare" username, or username@REALM.ORG (or username@realm.org, case-insensitive). I'm not sure what to massage to accomplish this either, I'm thinking something in the "hints" file, but that appears to be intended for dial-up modem bank auth... Below, in order, is the following output from radiusd -X - the only thing I've changed is to alter the DNS domain name and realm name, the place isn't really called foobar.net ;-) 1. good auth of FreeIPA account from radtest (again) 2. good auth of FreeIPA account from Mikrotik NAS (which only sends MSCHAP secrets) [above from the same radiusd -X session] Config changed and "DEFAULT Auth-Type := Kerberos" added to "users" file, radiusd -X relaunched: 3. good auth of FreeIPA account from radtest (proof that my Kerberos config works on its own) I truly appreciate any guidance the list can provide! Obviously, this means I can't use Kerberos everywhere, because MSCHAP verification isn't a User-Password attribute (which Kerberos requires).
So you can tell the difference between both auth types - if there's a User-Password then you want to do Kerberos, otherwise you want to do mschap.
if I set DEFAULT Auth-Type := Kerberos in the "users" file ... I am able to get Access-Accept back from radiusd, and I can see the Kerberos authN process happen in the debug output from radiusd.
Which is good as you've shown Kerberos works.
When I set "DEFAULT Auth-Type := Kerberos" in the "users" / "authorize" file, this then (obviously) breaks *other* types of authN (and I saw in the "default" site config that it is not recommended to set a default Auth-Type!)
Yes, because you're forcing Auth-Type. Generally you don't want to do that (but Kerberos is one case where you do).
So, I want to use MSCHAP hash checking if that's what the NAS is sending, but I want to use Kerberos if the NAS is sending User-Password.
Sure
I'm not sure which file(s) I should be editing and what magic lines I need to make this sort of logic happen. I read up on unlang a bit, but when I tried putting what I thought was a basic unlang statement into "users", radiusd got angry and wouldn't start.
Unlang goes in the virtual server files (sites-{available,enabled}/*), not in the users file (which is the module configuration file for rlm_files).
I'm thinking maybe I need an "if" or two in the "authorize { }" section of the "site" config (I'm just using a copy of the "default" site), but some of the documentation explicitly says NOT to put unlang into that stanza, so I got confused and came here.
I don't know where you read that, but it's completely wrong. Edit sites-enabled/default, go to the authorize{} section. Auth-Type is normally set to "PAP" by the pap module, which looks for the User-Password attribute. So comment out 'pap' (at the end of that section) and instead put if (&User-Password) { update control { &Auth-Type = Kerberos } } remove the DEFAULT entry you've put in the users file. Then mschap will be called first, which will set Auth-Type if the MS-CHAP-* attributes exist, otherwise won't set it. Later on the unlang above will set it to Kerberos if a) the User-Password attribute exists, and b) it wasn't set before ("=" instead of ":=").
No, "hints" is old, most people should ignore it. You can add a realm to proxy.conf, and let the rlm_realm module (see "suffix" in the default virtual server) handle it, e.g. realm realm.com { } Alternatively, add "split_username_nai" near the top of authorize{} (from policy.d/canonicalization) which will put the stripped username in Stripped-User-Name, but it will work for any realm, not just ones you've listed. -- Matthew

Yeah, I knew that forcing auth-type was going to be a problem, but it's helpful to know that Kerberos is a case where I need to do something special. :)

Unlang goes in the virtual server files (sites-{available,enabled}/*), not in the users file (which is the module configuration file for rlm_files).
This is also very helpful... is there an overview of what each file is supposed to do somewhere? There is *a lot* in here.
From the comments in the "default" site file, but I fully admit I likely misunderstood this... :-) And I just realized I saw this in the *authenticate* section, not authorize... [sites-available/default]: # Authentication. [...] # Please do not put "unlang" configurations into the "authenticate" # section. Put them in the "post-auth" section instead. That's what # the post-auth section is for. [/end]
Edit sites-enabled/default, go to the authorize{} section. Auth-Type is normally set to "PAP" by the pap module, which looks for the User-Password attribute. So comment out 'pap' (at the end of that section) and instead put
if (&User-Password) { update control { &Auth-Type = Kerberos } }
remove the DEFAULT entry you've put in the users file.
This makes sense, and I went back and re-read some of TFM (https://wiki.freeradius.org/guide/Concepts) and I now understand why it belongs in authorize{}, too. I can confirm this works as expected, so now I'm krb'ing instead of pap'ing, but the MSCHAP junk still functions as well. :-)n

Alternatively, add "split_username_nai" near the top of authorize{} (from policy.d/canonicalization) which will put the stripped username in Stripped-User-Name, but it will work for any realm, not just ones you've listed.
I don't actually want to proxy to anywhere else, I just want to use it locally... I'm guessing this is just "the way it's done" though? I'm fine with a failure for anything that doesn't match my predefined realm(s), though. Are realms (defined in proxy.conf) case-sensitive? I see the examples in the comments that mention regexp realms are NOT sensitive, but I'm guessing non-regex are? I tried adding: realm foobar.net { } as well as realm FOOBAR.NET { } to proxy.conf, but I'm still getting complaints that the realm doesn't exist: (0) suffix: Checking for suffix after "@" (0) suffix: Looking up realm "foobar.net" for User-Name = "testuser@foobar.net" (0) suffix: No such realm "foobar.net" Do I actually need to populate the realm { } stanzas with ... something (like home_server or similar)? or should they look like the realm LOCAL { } does? Unlang goes in the virtual server files (sites-{available,enabled}/*), not in the users file (which is the module configuration file for rlm_files).
This is also very helpful... is there an overview of what each file is supposed to do somewhere? There is *a lot* in here.
Each file is extensively documented as to what it does, and what syntax it takes. The "users" file has tons of comments at the top pointing you to "man users", and it also has a short description of the format of the "users" file. There's also raddb/sites-available/README, which describes what virtual servers are, and what can go into them. In short, if the documentation says you can do something, then it works. If the document *doesn't* say that you can do something, then it won't work.
You can add a realm to proxy.conf, and let the rlm_realm module (see "suffix" in the default virtual server) handle it, e.g.
realm realm.com { }

Realms are "known domain names". i.e. "user@example.com". You don't put that string into LDAP, tho. It's usually just "user". So the config: realm example.com { } tells the server that it's a local domain name / realm, and it's safe to split "user@example.com" into "user". This is all *extensively* documented in proxy.conf. It explains what the differences are between local realms, and proxied realms.

Yes.

You can have an empty realm definition, as Matthew and the documentation suggest. If it's not working for you, then something is configured incorrectly. Run the server in debug mode to see what. Alan DeKok.

For the most part everything is behaving as I expect, and the debug output of radiusd is definitely very helpful. I've figured out a bunch of things before having to bug the list. :-)

If it's not working for you, then something is configured incorrectly. Run the server in debug mode to see what. I'm following the guidance on the site and have been running in debug mode, and the first thing I do after a test auth is go read the scrollback in that tmux buffer. ;)
Your comment got me to re-inspect more carefully, and I found where the problem was. I read through much of radiusd.conf when first setting things up, and I thought, "I don't need to proxy anything to other servers, this is all local!" so I changed "proxy_requests" to "no" and commented out "$INCLUDE proxy.conf", and I did this a week ago. I just now saw that the debug output wasn't reading proxy.conf, and after I poked around I realized I shot myself in the foot. Insert facepalm.jpg here. Presumably I *could* be setting up realms in a separate (dedicated) file and just $INCLUDE'ing that instead? But for future maintenance's sake / standardization, I'll just stick to this... it's not really hurting me to leave things close to default state. One minor thing I did run into though:
Are realms (defined in proxy.conf) case-sensitive? Yes. If *non-regex* realm names are *supposed* to be case-sensitive within proxy.conf, they certainly aren't behaving that way. If I just use a single (lowercase) instance of the realm, this catches and splits correctly on both ucase and lcase realm names when fed from a NAS/radtest.
If the same realm is included _twice_ in proxy.conf, once uppercase and a second time lowercase, the server dies immediately after hitting the second copy of the realm in the debug output, with no real explanation as to why it quit. ~~~~ snippet of freeradius -X output, reading proxy.conf section realm example.com { auth_pool = my_auth_failover } realm FOOBAR.NET { } realm foobar.net { } # realm foobar.net ~~~~ That is exactly how it dies - a # and then a copy of the duplicated "realm X" line, and the process is gone. If I change the order (put lowercase first, then uppercase), the death message contains the uppercase realm name instead (it seems to just die with "# realm secondinstance") Comments in proxy.conf itself do imply that the realm name *is* case sensitive in the steps describing the search ordering ("non-regex realm with an *exact* match for the name"), but it seems like non-regex realms are actually NOT sensitive. Again, I truly appreciate the help you've both provided, hopefully this will be the end of my trouble, at least for a while. ;) Cheers, Braden

Yup. :)

Sure. The various config files are brought in via $INCLUDE, so the content can be anywhere. We just separate them out into different files for sanity and management simplicity.

Hmm... just checked again. Yes, they're case insensitive. DNS names and all that.

It exits with an error (do "echo $?", and you'll see a non-zero exit code). But yes, it should print an error. I've pushed a fix with a descriptive error message. Alan DeKok.
