Arran, thanks for your input, you are right; MySQL cluster does not offer any built-in HA module, according to what I've read there are different ways to achieve it, also I read in wiki.freeradius.org/Fail-over that there are Fail-Over and Load-Balancing modules in which we could setup more than one databases for authentication or accounting, so I didn't know that FreeRADIUS could do the load-balance part that's why I was asking if MySQL Cluster would have a floating IP address... anyway that addressed my initial question. After additional debugging the fault seems to be with a rouge backup process running on DB host, causing it to be slow to un-responsive for 10-20 minutes. (all unclosed sessions are within this time frame) This is easy to fix, but I'm looking for a way to make a fail-safe solution. There can always be occasions where DB connection is momentarily slow due to some other issue like network or storage, Since SQL is used here only for accounting data, is there a way to set the radius to accept all users (or reject all) in case DB is not-available, possibly keeping a buffer of accounting data to be written when DB access is restored? I am currently considering two possible solitions: Create a fail over for sql to allow login if sql is n/a, Similar to: redundant { sql ok } and/or use buffered-sql to catch these queries and update them in sql at later time. Is it possible to use buffered-sql and still perform simultaneous use checks based on same DB? Thanks for all replies, Amir.

FreeRADIUS performance information (tuning, benchmark)

I'm running FreeRADIUS on a PC with a dual CPU of 2 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. It is working with PostgreSQL database. When I perform tests with radperf, running : radperf -s -f ../users.csv -p 800 -a pap 10.3.1.1 auth radiussomething where users.csv file contains 10000 user names with password, I get this output: Total succeeded : 3811 Total failed : 6189 Total no reply : 0 Total time (s) : 10.588 Packets/s : 944 Response times: < 10 usec : 0 < 100 usec : 0 < msec : 0 < 10 msec : 1 < 0.1s : 3758 < s : 5897 < 10s : 344 < 100s : 0 (the result is a good one taking in account the packets amount processed per second - related to more tests that I did). I would need a sever able to manage a much greater amount of users ( > 50000, up to 1000000). But for now I'm interested how to get the server working well with ~(50000<->100000) users. What configuration do I need for this (I mean hardware configuration)? What are the best recommended improvements that should be done? Would JRadius module help on improving performance? (I'm not familiar about JRadius). Thanks for any suggestions. N.B. In attachment you have the important part from output of running radiusd -XXX together with with radperf.

[ANN][FEATURE]: Reference based accounting queries

The accounting section of rlm_sql has been modified to use reference based accounting queries. Accounting and post-auth now have their own subsections, and contain a config pair called reference. The value of this is expanded to give a config path, and the config pair this resolves to is used as the query value. If the query fails and the config path matches multiple pairs the next pair is used. This emulates the 'alt' behaviour that was were before but can fail between N queries. I've tested the MySQL version pretty thoroughly, but it'd be nice if people using Postgresql, Mssql, and Oracle could also test, just to make sure no query errors have crept in with the reformatting. Code is available here: https://github.com/arr2036/freeradius-server/tree/dynamic_acct_query_select… There's also a patch in that branch from Alan to strip off whitespace from the start ofline continuations if the config pair value begins with "\\n - slightly magic but seems to be pretty effective - debug output is much more readable. The MySQL schemas have also been updated with new features. If anyone fancies adding the following to the default schemas/configs it'd be much appreciated: * Calculating all times from %{integer:Event-Timestamp} (you'll have to convert from unix timestamp using an SQL function) and removing the acctstartdelay and acctstopdelay columns. * Adding an acctupdatetime column, and updating it when a new session is created or an interim-update packet is received. * Adding an acctinterval column and updating it using the delta (in seconds) between the last acctupdatetime value and the current time (this is really easy way to do stale session detection if your NAS supports interim-updates). This is difficult in some SQL dialects, because there's no guarantee that fields will be modified in the order specified in the query. * Removing the xascend column, and using a single list of fields for all insert operations. Look at the MySQL schema if the above are unclear, and please post to the devel list if you want to work on one of the schemas/databases, so we don't have duplicate effort. -Arran Note: Redundant queries are now supported in post-auth too, so it should be possible to maintain a table of just the last authentication attempt for a user if thats all the post-auth data you're interested in. Note: As part of the rewrite i've removed the Cisco session length hack. If anyone was still using this please contact me, and we'll work something out.

Setting realm from called station id regex

Hello, I have some devices that report to radius accounting but do not do any authentication or authorization. For these sessions in accounting, I would like to set a realm based on the called station id. The called station id ends with a colon and the SSID. I thought I could write a simple regular expression for the ssid and set the realm. Here is what I have right now, but it does not seem to be working: DEFAULT Called-Station-Id =~ "myssid" Realm = "myrealm" Any help is greatly appreciated. Chris

Problems with Freeradius password encryption

I'm trying to do some performance tests with FR 2.1.10. I'm using radperf tool. I have two different machines with freeradius installed on them. You are editing the wrong file. Read the output of radiusd -X The server config files will be eg /usr/local/etc/raddb/ alan -- This smartphone uses free WiFi around the world with eduroam, now that's what I call smart.
