Dear Radius Community,
I would like to test one lab as describe below.
There are few CISCO Layer 2 switches located by building floors. I have a few clients in the organization. I want every user connected to any switch will getting the VLAN ID assignment from Radius server. Suppose it will authenticated by MAC address of each PCs.
If the MAC not exist in radius database, client's pc could not have any access to network.
I'm not sure if CISCO and Radius could do as requirement above?
Thanks for input from everyone.
Regards,
Victor

Hi,
we have a freeradius server collecting accounting events from a few Nokia GGSN’s and are storing them into the MySQL DB.
Now that we have activated all messages we are receiving around 20K messages a minute, and have started seeing these events in the radius.log
Tue Jun 14 22:53:33 2016 : Info: WARNING: Please check the configuration file. The value for 'max_requests' is probably set too low.
it was originally set to 1024, when we increased it and set it to 4096 the amount of such events was reduced but still didn’t disappear.
If we set it higher (6100 for example) we start getting these errors
Tue Jun 14 21:30:02 2016 : Error: Received conflicting packet from client localhost port 41935 - ID: 200 due to unfinished request 192178. Giving up on old request.
why does this event appear? what would be the best way to manage this situation?
The server has 8 Cores and 4GB of RAM.
It seems that the CPU isn’t overly loaded, but our RAM is almost completely used by the Radius and Mysql processes.
Will adding RAM to this server help us? or isn’t it the bottleneck for this issue?
Thanks
Liran

I've been working on setting up a Microsoft Routing and Remote Access server that uses Freeradius for Authentication. Out of the box, it works fine with simple user entries in the "users" file. This is with both the Ubuntu 14.04 apt-get installations of Freeradius (2.1.x) as well as a compiled from source version of Freeradius 2.2.9. I run in to trouble when I try to add two factor authentication to the mix. I'm trying to use LinOTP as a possible replacement of our CryptoCard Blackshield implementation. The problem is that both products seem to only work with unencrypted passwords. LinOTP has two options for Freeradius authentication. There is a linotp2 module that can be compiled and installed along with Freeradius, and there is also a perl script that can be linked in with the rlm_perl module. Looking at the perl script, it is expecting to find the attribute "User-Password" in the radius request, which it uses, along with the username, to go to a web URL on the LinOTP server to verify authentication. I suspect that the linotp2 module works similarly. The documentation provided by LinOTP says to set "DEFAULT Auth-Type := linotp2" if you're using the module or "DEFAULT Auth-Type := perl" if you're using the perl script in the freeradius users file. Now, this will "work" for narrow authentication types like Microsoft's SSTP with an unencrypted password, but I'd like this solution to be more widely usable (Macs, iOS devices, etc) and use something like IKEv2, but that uses EAP-MSCHapv2. If I try that, the authentication fails saying there is no password.
My question is...am I tilting at windmills trying to make this work? I feel like it *should* be possible to do 2 factor authentication without having to resort to PPTP/unecrypted password or microsoft's proprietary SSTP. Is there a way to have freeradius pass the MSChapv2 password to a perl script or another module? Or perhaps it's possible to modify the perl script so it can accept an encrypted password? I feel like maybe there's a way to configure authentication in the "inner-tunnel" freeradius site that would make this possible. EAP-MSChapv2 authentication works with a plain, unencrypted password in the users file, so it obviously HAS the password that the user sends in SOME fashion.
A secondary question is that I imagine I can't be the first person to use Freeradius with 2 factor authentication. I'd be curious to know how other folks have tackled this project and what products they used to accomplish it.

Dear List,
I have a wired 802.1X working setup using the following:
- PEAPoMSCHAPv2 + Mac verification in MySQL DB for all 802.1X capable
endpoints.
- MAB only for all non 802.1X capable endpoints.
but still, I am confused about the difference a simple ntlm_auth as an
authentication method used by winbind, and a 'direct' winbind
authentication (from a freeradius point of view)!
My main concern is here:
http://wiki.freeradius.org/guide/Active-Directory-direct-via-winbind
and my setup used

.. Any explanation would really be appreciated :)

FR 3.0.11 \ ubuntu 16.04 winbind Active directory group validation issue.
by Jean-Pierre Zurbrügg 13 Jun '16

Hello everyone,
Ubuntu 16.04 64bit
Freeradius 3.0.11 (from ppa.launchpad.net/freeradius/stable-3.0/ubuntu)
Samba 4.3.9-Ubuntu
I have a freeradius 3.0.4 (git #7c9d5fb) running under ubuntu 14.04
correctly and I'm Trying to replicate this functionality on a new
Ubuntu 16.04 LAB VM but I'm having dificulties validating Group
memberships via a Winbind ~ Active Directory setup. The configuration
was done manually; I did not copy any files from the FR 3.0.4 machine.
I have disabled sites-enabled/default and put my own site called DGP
along with a default inner-tunnel configuration file.
In the DGP site's Post-Auth {} section I'm trying to validate the
'Group' Attribute via the following IF statement:
if (Group == "ADLAB\\\\fw-wifi-access") {} which generates the
following line while debugging:
Failed resolving GID: No error
winbindd -SFd5 generates the following debug snippet when validating
the IF statement above:
----
getpwnam ADLAB\userx
getgrnam ADLAB\\fw-wifi-access
child daemon request 59
msrpc_name_to_sid: name=ADLAB\\fw-wifi-access
name_to_sid [rpc] ADLAB\\fw-wifi-access for domain ADLAB
rpc_api_pipe: host dc01.adlab.local
rpc_write_send: data_to_write: 176
rpc_read_send: data_to_read: 176
Finished processing child request 59
Could not convert sid S-0-0: NT_STATUS_NONE_MAPPED
----
While troubleshooting I changed the IF statement to: if (Group ==
"ADLAB\\fw-wifi-access") {}
and this time I no longer get the 'Failed resolving GID: No error'
entry but the IF statement
returns false instead of true (the AD user is a member of this group).
I don't know what else to check in order to correct this problem. I'd
appreciate any tips given.
Thanks in advance!
#####################################################
Troubleshooting I've done:
wbinfo -u # returns all AD users without the domain Preffix
wbinfo -g # returns AD groups without the domain Preffix
ntlm_auth --request-nt-key --domain=<domain> --username=<user> # works
id <user> # returns user group membership <number>(<Group Name>)
id <DOMAIN>\<user> # returns user group membership <number>(<Group Name>)
wbinfo -G 7513 # returns SID value
I need to execute id <user> or id <domain>\<user> before I can use
this command.
wbinfo -Y S-1-5-21-297524306-2253920702-176340032-2513 # returns 7513
I've tried validating against ADLAB\\\\, ADLAB\\, and group name without prefix.
I've tried using all CAPS and all LOWERCASE for domain and group name.

Hi,
This is more a philosophical question then a practical one, as our current
setup works for us.
We run a 'frontend' server that proxies requests to a number of backends,
those backends reply with a number of attributes that define the service.
We check the attributes to make sure they form a logical setup. One of
those checks is quite convoluted and we've resorted to turning it into a
REST call. Since the rlm_rest doesn't support post-proxy we make that call
in post-auth.
We only reject a session in unusual circumstances (generally we modify the
attributes and admit the session, or drop it into a "walled-garden" setup),
so every time we send a reject - we update Reply-Message that we log using
linelog in "Post-Auth-Type Reject". That makes it easy to troubleshoot.
Now, with the rlm_rest module as far a we can tell there is no way to
reject a session and update the Reply-Message in one go. Even if we return
'Auth-Type := Reject' the session still get's admitted, if the code is 401
- then the session is rejected, but the body is not parsed (as per the
docs).
For now we've settled on an internal attribute that signals that the
session should be rejected, and we return it from REST (together with the
Reply-Message), and later look for it to change Auth-Type to Reject.
I was wondering if there is any simpler way of doing it.
kind regards
Pshem

Hello everyone,
I'm setting up a RADIUS server, and I've run into some trouble to authenticate a Windows 10 laptop via wireless. I got no reply to the 5th "Access-Challenge".
I'm running freeradius-server 3.0.11 with customized demo certificates:
I've integrated the certificate configuration changes from the branch 3.1.x, and also created a unencrypted key (.p12) for my Windows client.
I've installed the root CA certificate (.der) and the client key (.p12) into the User's certificate store on the Windows client.
During my troubleshooting, I've searched for other error reports for EAP-TLS & Windows:
* TLS version compatibility
-> I've forced Windows to use TLS 1.2 (add DWORD TlsVersion register) (unnecessary but done).
* 802.11 version compatibility
-> I've tried both 802.11a+g mode and 802.11b+g+n mode on the access point. I've also noted that the Windows 10 laptop can connect when wireless encryption is disabled.
* server certificate requirements
-> Windows successfully authenticates in PEAP mode with the dummy "bob" user when "Verify server certificate" is checked in EAP-TLS parameters
* root CA certificate requirements
* user certificate requirement
* user key requirement (no encryption)
-> Windows successfully authenticate in EAP-TLS mode on the wired connection.
So all certificates are correctly installed, and Windows can use the client's cert/key to authenticate.
I've tried to get some debugging info with the command:
netsh wlan set tra yes
netsh ras set tr * en
<connection attempt>
netsh ras set tr * dis
netsh wlan set tra no
However I got a handful of files, which ones are relevant ? The only advice I got from them is to check TLS and 802.11 compatibility.
Could someone kindly advise me to the next point ?
Has anyone run into a similar problem ?
Following is the failing connection log from freeradius-server:

Hello everyone,
we have a ubuntu 14.04 with freeradius 2.1.12+dfsg-1.2ubuntu8.1
configured to use Active Directory to do authentication (using winbind
and ntlm_auth), eap, pap and mschap.
Weekly the freeradius is restarted (with a signal HUP) by logrotate
and usually it works fine. But sometimes MSCHAP authentication stop
working after the restart (both plain with radtest and with PEAP from
wireless client) while PAP continues working.
We can detect the problem running `radtest -t pap ...` (it works) and
`radtest -t mschap ...` (it doesn't). The response we get is:
> rad_recv: Access-Reject packet from host 127.0.0.1 port 1812, id=204, length=38 MS-CHAP-Error = "\000E=691 R=1"
and the log says:
> Login incorrect (mschap: External script says )
Restarting the freeradius solves the problem (with service freeradius
restart).
I'm unable to reproduce it (it just happens sometimes, like once every
two months) and I can't get a debug log with `freeradius -X` because
restarting solves the problem.
I've been able to log the parameters passed to the external program
ntlm_auth that are:
> --request-nt-key --username=someuser --challenge=00 --nt-response=00 --domain=OUR_DOMAIN
the configuration is:
> ntlm_auth = "/usr/bin/ntlm_auth --request-nt-key --username=%{reply:AD-Samaccountname} --challenge=%{%{mschap:Challenge}:-00} --nt-response=%{%{mschap:NT-Response}:-00} --domain=OUR_DOMAIN"
so I think that for some reason the mschap module brokes down and
stops putting the right values in the dictionary.
I noticed that this (for now) happened only with weekly logrotate
restarts and not with manual restarts (when I update the
configuration).
Another thing I noticed is that it happens only at the primary radius
server (~500k authentications every week, some local and some proxied)
and not on the secondary (~40k authentications every week, basically
just monitoring). The two radius server share the same configuration
(as in "I copied the files") and software version.
Any hint in how to debug it? (or resolve it)
Thanks for reading my mail and for any help you could provide.
Regards,
Enrico Polesel
