As we're working to finalize v4 (real soon now!) one question which came up is MongDB. The Mongo team is currently looking into creating a fully async API for Mongo. We would need to use this in v4 in order to increase scalability. If we don't have such an API, then the Mongo drivers would be significantly slower than other databases. Authenticate to AD but only allow certain group

All, I've got authentication working nicely with MSCHAP, but now I'd like to only allow users that are members of a certain AD group. I would prefer to have this happen only when requests come from a specific client (wireless access point). In this case the idea is to have users only be able to get wireless access when they're in a specific AD group. How can I do this in freeradius? Thanks, Brian

No auth requests through TLS tunnel if connection was checked

Hi there, I want to make some additional checks for RadSec connections. After I’ve set `check_client_connections` to `yes`, the server is handling the connection over the auth type "Autz-Type New-TLS-Connection”. So far so good but after the connection has accepted, no further traffic is reaching the radius server. I can see in packet captures that Access-Requests are send to the server and on the server netstat is also showing that packets are going to the socket which FreeRADIUS opens but only the queue is getting higher and never processed. After seeing this behaviour, of course also tested the behaviour with the default config. Just enabled tls, changed the `check_client_connections` and added a ip wildcard to the radsec clients. Since I haven’t found any open GitHub issue or something on this list I assume either no one is using the functionality or there is something I’ve overlooked. The radius server is running as docker container but that shouldn't make any difference. debugging SSL self-signed cert issues

Hi - I've had a long-running setup with freeradius 3.0.16 which I acknowledge is likely quite ancient now, but I've barely had to touch it since I set it up about 4y ago ... I've been using self-signed certificate-based auth for our mobile label printers for some time without problems but after a CA certificate expiry extension (retaining the original CA key, pushing the notAfter date out) and creation of a new server-side certificate on my radius server, the clients will now generate a bad certificate alert whenever I try using it. I can replace the original server-side cert and things are ok again, so - something clearly is wrong with the new cert, but I haven't been able to pinpoint what. The old and new server cert have the same information, barring minor differences between their SANs and relevant dates. I've confirmed that openssl can verify both the old and new server certs against both the old and new CA certs and it seems to think everything is fine. For testing purposes, half the printers have been given the updated CA cert and the others are on the same original CA cert but this side of the equation doesn't appear to change the result - printers configured with either will start having issues if I start using the new server cert. I don't want to spam the list with long radiusd debug traces unless requested as I definitely think this is a cert issue of my own making, but I'm stumped as to how to get more information to isolate the underlying cause. Has anyone else encountered this problem before? Can I use diffrent root CA certificates while dynamic loading certificate chains?

Hi, we have a case that, with multi-tenancy, there will be multiple CA certificates in our FreeRadius server, so we need to load the certificate chains dynamically. But when I use the statements below, I can't include the CA certificates in the certificate files I set. The TLS-Session-Cert-File looks like it is only for the server certificate and intermediate CA certificates. Is there any chance of dynamic loading certificate chains with root CA certificates? BlastRADIUS

Hi All, Hopefully a quick one, I am on FreeRADIUS v3.2.1 so have implemented the recommended steps into my server to mitigate BlastRADIUS attacks (however unlikely) by adding the below into my default and inner-tunnel servers: authorize { if (!EAP-Message) { update reply { Message-Authenticator := 0x00 } } ... Since I am using EAPTTLS/PAP, surely I am not susceptible to BlastRADIUS since the PAP traffic is within a TLS tunnel? Or have I misunderstood? The RADIUS also only communicates locally so not over the internet. Furthermore after implementing the aforementioned change, nothing seems to have changed in the debug log. Should I see a difference between the debugs before implementing this change and after? Kind regards, Connor

MAC Authentication Queries

Hi Team, I have recently set up MAC Authentication to happen before my EAP authentication takes over and just had some questions about the configuration I used (found here <https://wiki.freeradius.org/guide/Mac-Auth>). The page states that you should use the below configuration to make this work: if (!ok) { # Reject if the MAC address was not permitted. reject } # If this is NOT 802.1x, mac-auth if (!EAP-Message) { # MAC address has already been checked, so accept update control { Auth-Type := Accept } } else { # Normal FreeRADIUS virtual server config goes here e.g. eap } } But seemingly whenever I enclose the rest of my Authorize config within the final 'else' statement I get an error: */etc/freeradius/3.0/sites-enabled/default[526]: Failed to find "Autz-Type" as a module or policy./etc/freeradius/3.0/sites-enabled/default[526]: Please verify that the configuration exists in /etc/freeradius/3.0/mods-enabled/Autz-Type./etc/freeradius/3.0/sites-enabled/default[526]: Failed to parse "Autz-Type" subsection./etc/freeradius/3.0/sites-enabled/default[285]: Errors parsing authorize section. * If I then take out the 'else' entirely, the error then disappears and my server seems to work fine. It performs the MAC auth, then goes through to doing the EAP-TTLS auth. My question is, is removing the else going to cause issues, and if so, how can I get around my error? Many thanks!

Hi all, I am trying to use freeradius with EAP-TLS but the client certificates are not trusted. We are using client certificates which are signed by our internal CA (signing chain is: client <- int-ca <- root-ca) Here is what I did: - Put the root CA and intermediate CA into "ca_path". - Set server.pem (issued by intermediate CA) - Set key.pem - Disable CRL/OCSP checks (for testing). The result when a client connects: /Certificate chain - 1 intermediate CA cert(s) untrusted To forbid these certificates see 'reject_unknown_intermediate_ca' (TLS) untrusted certificate with depth [2] subject name [ROOT CA CERTIFICATE] (TLS) untrusted certificate with depth [1] subject name [INT CA CERTIFICATE] (TLS) untrusted certificate with depth [0] subject name [CLIENT CERTIFICATE] tls: There are untrusted certificates in the certificate chain. Rejecting. Investigating Slow RADIUS Proxy Request

I have a few questions about how the FreeRADIUS proxy handles requests: 1. When proxying a request, does a FreeRADIUS thread remain blocked until a response is received from the home server? 2. Does the max_outstanding flag apply only to health status checks, or does it affect all requests proxied to the home server? * If a FreeRADIUS thread blocks while waiting for a response, does increasing max_outstanding to a high value like 65536 actually allow FreeRADIUS to send that many outstanding requests? Or is the number of threads the limiting factor? * If a proxy request doesn't block a thread, how does FreeRADIUS listen for responses from the home server? 1. We have a request that took 40 minutes to proxy. The snippet below, along with the complete log, shows the details. Hi， When proxying a accounting-request, does FreeRadius must listen for responses from the home server? If I only want the Freeradius proxy accounting-request to the home server, and do not care of the respose, what can I do?

Issue with 3.2.6 - dies/stops serving but is still running/listening on port

Since upgrading to 3.2.6 we're seeing an issue where the radiusd program just "dies" and stops receiving/handling requests, yet the program itself is still running, has a PID, and netstat shows it's still listening on the ports. I can see the requests still reaching the machine via tcpdump but nothing from radiusd. We're using TLS to support EAP connections but no clients are using TLS on this particular server so it's all UDP, though TLS is still enabled and listening. OpenSSL version is 3.0.2 I've included some logs from what little I know about gdb and wondered if anyone can advise the likely culprit of the issue. The last entries in radius.log were normal authentications and then it just died and stopped receiving requests. I've also observed the same in debug mode, nothing is showing untoward in the output on screen before it dies. Hi guys A few weeks back, I used FreeRADIUS 3.0.26 on Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS before upgrading to FreeRADIUS 3.2.4 (NetworkRADIUS packages). Everything works great so far, except two attributes are missing in our logs since then: TLS-Session-Version and TLS-Session-Cipher-Suite. Force reauth possible? (INTERNAL)

Hi I may have asked this before but can't find any references or replies. Anyway, I'm running FreeRADIUS 3.2.6 and I'm using EAP-TLS only. When a device has authenticated it seems to be in that state forever until it reboots or loses its network connection. Is there any parameter I could set that would force my devices to re-authenticate after a certain amount of time? ./PerW Sensitivity: Internal

802.1x and MAC Authentication

Hi All, I am attempting to setup my server so that it now checks a MAC address and then provided the MAC address is ok it then moves on to performing EAP authentication. This seems to be working fine but I noticed something in the logs that I wanted to query. I am using this guide <https://wiki.freeradius.org/guide/Mac-auth#mac-auth-and-802-1x>. Whenever the RADIUS server sends an Access-Challenge, it still sends the usual EAP-Message, Message-Authenticator, and State attributes, however it now also sends a Reply-Message on the line above these in the format of the one in the aforementioned guide: Reply-Message = "Device with MAC Address %{Calling-Station-Id} authorized for network access" Doesn't seem like something to worry about just wondered if there was any way around this? Further to this the guide says: if (!ok) { # Reject if the MAC address was not permitted. reject } # If this is NOT 802.1x, mac-auth if (!EAP-Message) { # MAC address has already been checked, so accept update control { Auth-Type := Accept Unless I am misunderstanding this is saying, "check the MAC address, if this isn't correct then continue. If it is correct but someone isn't using EAP then just allow them through". Surely unless someone were to comment out all authentication modules besides EAP in the default server, this would just allow someone to get onto the network with a correct MAC even if they don't have auth credentials? You need to be very careful running a RADIUS server in Azure if you're using RADIUS/UDP. Azure has a network security feature on by default that drops fragmented UDP packets that arrive out of order. This negatively impacts RADIUS/UDP traffic. To give you an example, at least 20% of EAP-TLS auth attempts were failing for us in the cert auth phase due to this issue. Azure support can turn on the 'enable-udp-fragment-reordering' feature by request after providing packet captures and use case info etc. They will also only turn it on in a brand new subscription that's dedicated to running VMs that require this feature. After we did this, our auth success rate increased to 100%. Another thing to be wary of is setting 'tls_max_version' to 1.3. Windows 11 supports TLS 1.3 by default for EAP-TLS etc but does not yet support session resumption when using this protocol (see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/networking/technologies/ex…) It's worth dropping the Max version to 1.2.

SQL Injection

Hi All, Hopefully a quick one, is the SQL module still susceptible to SQL injection in version 3.2.1 of FreeRADIUS? I was having a look through implementing some anti SQL injection measures since I found a security notification on the FreeRADIUS site for it, but given that it is quite an old notification, is this still required? FreeRadius dynamic DB secret with vault

Hi All, I am using FreeRADIUS 3.2.6 and want to do the dynamic DB secret with Vault. I failed to use the console socket to send a SIGHUP signal to reload the SQL module when the DB secret changes. It seems that not all of the modules support reloading. So, I wonder if there are any ways to reload the SQL module or support the dynamic Vault secret. Thanks.

root ca creation issue

Hi all, I am trying to make a root ca per recommendation [ https://www.freeradius.org/documentation/freeradius-server/4.0.0/raddb/cert… | https://www.freeradius.org/documentation/freeradius-server/4.0.0/raddb/cert… ] but when I run $ make distclean as suggested to remove the test certificates I get this root@host:/etc/freeradius/certs# make distclean make: *** No rule to make target 'distclean'. Stop. Trying to bootstrap again, just to test root@host:/etc/freeradius/certs# ./bootstrap server.pem: OK I can do those 2 commands again without difference BTW: I used these instructions to install the binary [ https://www.networkradius.com/packages/#fr32-debian-bookworm | https://www.networkradius.com/packages/#fr32-debian-bookworm ] So it is not the 4.0.0 but I can't find this in the 3.2 manual thanks for any suggestions, Joost

TLS errors and clients sometimes rejected

Hi, sometimes clients are rejected with the errors below, and sometimes the same clients are accepted. No worries. You could look at using RadSec instead if your APs support it. I'm not sure about Meraki. I'm looking forward to going full RadSec and moving our FreeRADIUS VMs/containers back into our standard subscriptions as soon as one of our partners supports it. We're good on the device front.
