MongoDB and v4

As we're working to finalize v4 (real soon now!) one question which came up is MongDB. The Mongo team is currently looking into creating a fully async API for Mongo. We would need to use this in v4 in order to increase scalability. If we don't have such an API, then the Mongo drivers would be significantly slower than other databases. Authenticate to AD but only allow certain group

All, I've got authentication working nicely with MSCHAP, but now I'd like to only allow users that are members of a certain AD group. I would prefer to have this happen only when requests come from a specific client (wireless access point). In this case the idea is to have users only be able to get wireless access when they're in a specific AD group. How can I do this in freeradius? Thanks, Brian

RADSEC keep TLS connections open with keep-alive

Hi there, Is it possible to configure FreeRADIUS server not to close TCP/TLS RADSEC connection between NAS and RADIUS server after completing a single request? Some network vendors support sending keep-alive messages through the connection in order to keep it established and re-use it for subsequent requests. I think a possible alternate solution would be to put a load balancer in front of the RADIUS server which would handle the persistent connection. Best, Michal Moravec

Status of v4

While there have been many rumours of v4 and promises of releases, it's likely time for a realistic summary of what's going on. v4 has take a long time in part because we want to do it "right", and in part because the development model has changed substantially since 3.0.0 was released. Prior to v4, FreeRADIUS was largely a part-time effort for the people involved. Everyone had day jobs, and pushed the server forward a little bit, based on available time. The result was something which worked, but which definitely had some rough edges. Since the release of 3.0.0, FreeRADIUS has become a full-time job for the core developers. This means that while there is significantly more work done on FreeRADIUS than before, the new releases have slowed down substantially. Why? There are two reasons. The first reason is that people like to eat. Customer projects take time away from FreeRADIUS, but also pay the bills. The second reason is that we now have the resources to re-architect the server to be everything we've wanted it to be. And rearchitecture takes time. The good news is that v4 is stable, and is running in multiple ISP environments. NDAs etc. prevent naming names, but be assured that it's running on many sites with millions of users. Another piece of good news is that the list of "TODOs" for v4 is growing much shorter. The current list of features in v3 which are missing in v4 is: * statistics, so that people can monitor server behaviour * RADIUS/TLS or RadSec. That's pretty much it. And I think even RADIUS/TLS could be dropped from an initial 4.0, and added to a later release. We could call 4.0 an "ISP" version, and then add RADIUS/TLS later, to ensure that the eduroam people are happy with it. There are also lower priority features in v3 which aren't in v4: * EAP-FAST * EAP-TEAP * changes to the DPSK module We're OK with adding those later, as they are lower priority. So what took us so long? We ended up essentially re-doing everything from scratch. This is known as the "second system syndrome". But I think the results are worth it. While the configuration is still recognizably FreeRADIUS, the outcome is enormously better than v3. All of the weird / confusing issues have been cleared up. The documentation is obsessively complete (and we have a full-time person working on it). There are hundreds of unit tests / regression tests. It's automatically run under multiple static analyzers and fuzzers. The list of new features in v4 is large: * DNS, DHCPv4, DHCPv6, and even LDAP sync are now core protocols, and are fully supported. All in the same binary at the same time. We're adding support for more, too. (Native DER decoding!) * the server is fully asynchronous, so blocking databases are much less of a problem. Observed throughput is noticeably higher * unlang has been updated with many new keywords and functionality. You can now do expressions in-place. The "update" section is no longer needed, so configurations get simpler and clearer. The function syntax finally makes sense, and looks a lot better * and many, many, more. At this point, if we're willing to drop RADIUS/TLS from a v4 release, the only blocking issue is statistics. And there's no reason why we can't have that done by June. Comments? Feedback? TLS Session Resumption with Proxy in Inner-Tunnel Not Working

Hello FreeRADIUS community, I am currently using FreeRADIUS 3.2.x as a RADIUS proxy to forward EAP-PEAP/MSCHAPv2 authentication requests to a backend Microsoft NPS server. The setup is working correctly, but I am facing an issue with TLS session resumption when using a proxy in the inner-tunnel: Attributes are never saved in the tls cache. When I use this setup without any proxy at all, TLS session resumption just works as expected. Is TLS session resumption supported when using FreeRADIUS as a proxy for the inner authentication? If so, how can I properly cache the TLS session in this scenario? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help! Best regards, Pierrick

LDAP and RFC2868 tagged attributes for Tunnel

I would like to know if anyone has encountered (and solved!) this before. I am trying to use LDAP Tunnel attributes to establish PPP over L2TP tunnels from a provider's LAC to our LNS. Hi all, We run into a bit of a strange edge case when our DBAs have to perform maintenance on a database cluster. Within a minute, the master has flipped, so new connections to the load-balancer name will get the new read-write replica. However, when this happened last month, we aw it take about 8 minutes before we stopped seeing ERROR 1290, DG is readonly (paraphrased) in radiusd.log. Is there anything in particular we can tweak in the SQL config to minimize that time between reconnections? Thanks, -Coy

Hi Guys This might be off topic but I was wondering if someone with more knowledge than me, would be able to confirm the following :- In a mobile network scenario with thousands of IoT devices On our radius servers, we've been noticing a lot of 0-byte sessions on our databases and upon investigation, we've seen the following behaviour :- > Authentication Request Received < Access Accept sent back > Accounting Start Packet Received with a Acct-Session-Id < Acknowledgement sent back > Interim Accounting Packet Received - This time with a different Acct-Session-Id for the same connection ** At this point, things start going bad as we are not able to update the original DB entry created with the Acct Start Packet, since the Acct-Session-Id differs between the packet received in the Accounting Start Packet and the Interim Accounting Packet. This results in a 0-session entry in the DB for the Accounting Start Packet entry as a new entry is written into the DB based on the new Acct-Session-Id received in the Interim Accounting packet. Any subsequent packets received with a different Acct-Session-Id, results in writing a new DB entry when the Interim Accounting Packet is received. We queried this with the upstream provider, and they advised that the 3GPP-NSAPI number changes when packets are received and they claim that the Acct-Session-Id on their side would change based on the 3GPP-NSAPI value that could (and in most cases) changes. < Acknowledgement Sent back >From what I've been reading, The Acct-Session-Id should remain constant for the entire PDP context/session, even when the NSAPI changes because the Acct-Session-Id is meant to uniquely identify the entire user session. NSAPI changes are considered sub-sessions within the main PDP context and keeping the same Acct-Session-Id helps maintain session continuity for billing and tracking purposes, which is exactly our use case for accounting which is not working as expected.
