As we're working to finalize v4 (real soon now!) one question which came up is MongDB. The Mongo team is currently looking into creating a fully async API for Mongo. We would need to use this in v4 in order to increase scalability. If we don't have such an API, then the Mongo drivers would be significantly slower than other databases. Authenticate to AD but only allow certain group

All, I've got authentication working nicely with MSCHAP, but now I'd like to only allow users that are members of a certain AD group. I would prefer to have this happen only when requests come from a specific client (wireless access point). In this case the idea is to have users only be able to get wireless access when they're in a specific AD group. How can I do this in freeradius? Thanks, Brian

No auth requests through TLS tunnel if connection was checked

Hi there, I want to make some additional checks for RadSec connections. After I’ve set `check_client_connections` to `yes`, the server is handling the connection over the auth type "Autz-Type New-TLS-Connection”. So far so good but after the connection has accepted, no further traffic is reaching the radius server. I can see in packet captures that Access-Requests are send to the server and on the server netstat is also showing that packets are going to the socket which FreeRADIUS opens but only the queue is getting higher and never processed. After seeing this behaviour, of course also tested the behaviour with the default config. Just enabled tls, changed the `check_client_connections` and added a ip wildcard to the radsec clients. Since I haven’t found any open GitHub issue or something on this list I assume either no one is using the functionality or there is something I’ve overlooked. The radius server is running as docker container but that shouldn't make any difference. Can I use diffrent root CA certificates while dynamic loading certificate chains?

Hi, we have a case that, with multi-tenancy, there will be multiple CA certificates in our FreeRadius server, so we need to load the certificate chains dynamically. But when I use the statements below, I can't include the CA certificates in the certificate files I set. The TLS-Session-Cert-File looks like it is only for the server certificate and intermediate CA certificates. Is there any chance of dynamic loading certificate chains with root CA certificates? Updates to some dictionary files - infinera, transmode, coriant

We recently updated freeradius, and noticed that it came with a "dictionary.infinera". Generally we're looking to see if this project is interested in some updates to this file. What's listed in the file that comes with FreeRADIUS is actually "transmode" (an infinera acquisition). We have 3 definition files we use for Inffinera, one is "actual infinera", one is "coriant" and one is "transmode". Posting here with hopes they get integrated into FreeRADIUS, as many of htem were barely documented things deep inside these vendor's docs. If it's kosher to put vendor acquisitions inside their current vendor's file, then adding them to "dictionary.infinera" is good. Hi, In the 3.2.x branch, with the `Autz-Type New-TLS-Connection` it is possible to log the certificate details of the client trying to connect and check some additional things. Is there also a Post-Autz or something similar to log the certificate details if the client certificate has been rejected? I’m not able to find something in the documentation so the answer may be `no` but in case I’ve missed something would be great to point me to the docs. BR, Lineconnect

Is this sort of query possible using ldap xlat? 2. If so, am I missing something obvious? 3. Ability to disable SSL certificate checking for LDAPS (636)?

We're rebuilding some radius servers from Centos 7 to Ubuntu 22, due to the Centos 8 debacle. Both are 3.0.x. We ported our config over, which uses LDAPS:// on 636 on a Microsoft Windows 2022 AD server. We do not want to use TLS on 389. Something seems different behaviourally between the servers, the new Ubuntu server (FreeRADIUS 3.0.26) appears to be attempting to validate the certificate much more heavily. This must be an AD thing, but we get this stuff about "DomainDnsZones" and "ForestDnsZones" when we attempt to authenticate, and it hence fails. The bind is successful and omitted below: ======================================== TLS: hostname (ForestDnsZones.ad.MYDOMAIN.net) does not match common name in certificate (ad.MYDOMAIN.net) TLS: can't connect: (unknown error code). Unable to chase referral "ldaps://ForestDnsZones.ad.MYDOMAIN.net/DC=ForestDnsZones,DC=ad,DC=MYDOMAIN,…" (-1: Can't contact LDAP server) TLS: hostname (DomainDnsZones.ad.MYDOMAIN.net) does not match common name in certificate (ad.MYDOMAIN.net) TLS: can't connect: (unknown error code). Question on client retransmit behavior

So an EAP 802.1x supplicant can do one of the following if it receives no response from the NAS: 1) Restart EAP from the top. 2) Retransmit packets from the ongoing EAP session. 3) Just wait and maybe the NAS retransmits for it. 4) (Hopefully not) have a really old proxy in the chain that does retransmits for the NAS/client. If anyone has had the time to go down this rabbithole, is there any uniformity of client behavior here? That's really all I want to know... just trying to figure out if turning off NAS-initiiated retransmits is a wise move. But, if you'd like to hear a scary story, pull up a chair, I am glad to oblige: Lately we've had quite a few eduroam guest clients show up sending to lame servers that do not respond. Also, lately, supplicants have seem to have been getting quite aggressive at re-launching frequent authentication attempts after failures. But what good zombie doesn't enjoy bumping repeatedly against the door? Our NAS units serve these clients and our home users on the same SSID (we do fortunately have an additional non-"eduroam" one as well, where one can seek refuge, but many of our users are... adventurous) The NAS units have no idea that these two groups of users are different. So... in the wee hours of the night... ...when not many people are around to provide good authentications, ...when a lame eduroam guest client manages to authenticate three times (cue withered hand lifting a cast iron door knocker, spooky music, three loud knocks) ...the NAS declares our proxy dead. It then rolls over to another proxy, and declares it dead as well, if it happens again. Despite all that is evident to the naked eye, this NAS does not believe in zombies. So... it won't retry any of the dead servers until a generous timeout goes by. Oh yeah, and no Status-Server support. (cue suspensful music) the serial proxy killer is on the loose. Once all proxies are dead, no client can authenticate for quite a few minutes (cue tumbleweed) Our front-end proxy is a FreeRADIUS server. This then proxies to... a haunted old house owned by a mysterious vendor. Which... retransmits proxied requests. Yes. That old. There appears (sigh) to be no way to turn this behavior off. It also has a maximum 5 second timeout between retransmits, and though it will respond to Status-Server requests, it will not send them to upstream proxies. You can imagine the mess that makes (cue pixelized gore) On the other side... well we're special we have backend servers... but this could happen to anyone, since all eduroam requests go to the same TLRS system. You may be able to protect your own users, but you are not able to keep your guests safe from one another. If just one zombie gets into the guest house, all your friends may find themselves... well... So we have been trying to kill the zombies on the back-end... but 5 seconds, minus 1 for the reject-delay, minus 1 for the DMZ proxy reject delay... 3 seconds is perhaps a bit tight for a 7-way handshake zig-zagging across the globe as it trickles through the federation servers. Now we're resorting to slaughtering zombies on the front end before they manage to get to the haunted house on clearpass lane. Ooops. Did I just name names? So sorry. Forget I said that. This of course messes up our logs, since only the NAS and the front end server see the rejection. Not that the logs were in great condition to start out, since it appears plenty of clients are now configured to just drop their EAP conversation if they are rejected in the inner tunnel, before issuing the outer tunnel challenge to get an outer tunnel Access-Reject. And finally, the haunted house... it logs all such occurences simply as just "timeout"s, unless you drill down to see whether the timeout was client or server side. But what's a little salt in the headwound, after all. Anyway, thank you for patronizing our hanted-house ride. Remember to collect your belongings as you leave the carts and... try to get a good night's sleep.

tunneled_reply vs outer.session-state

Hi there, I have a configuration which operates successfully with ‘use_tunneled_reply” set to yes. I am trying to remove the depreciated use_tunneled_reply in place of updating the outer.session-state but can’t seem to get it working. Users are not authorised after adjusting the config to the following… what am I missing? Hi everyone This is my very first contact with the FreeRadius users mailing list, so please feel free to point me into the right direction about the interaction with this mailing list. Happy to learn how to use it correctly / efficiently. What I am trying to do and why I am trying to do it: I am also very new to FreeRadius per se and I am in the middle of a server lifecycle. Our actual production servers run on version 3.0.12 and the new ones have version 3.0.26 installed. As we are an University with a lot of BYOD clients, we still support TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 and want to get rid of TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 in the near future. To know about the consequences, I would like to get a rough number of how many clients still using those old TLS versions. I know I can enable / increase the debug level in /etc/freeradius/3.0/radiusd.conf to see the TLS version used for all authentications, BUT this will fill up our logging partition pretty quick. *** What you expect the server to do: I would like to have a way to log the client TLS version used in /var/log/authz.log via the linelog module. failed memcached server handling

Hi Everyone, I am testing Freeradius v3.2.3 with cache module. the driver "rlm_cache_memcached". We plan to build a freeradius cluster with distributed memcached to cache user login status. During the test, I notice if memcached is offline, freeradius will either reject all new auth request or failed to start. The libmemcached document website is offline (http://docs.libmemcached.org) and I tried to search related information on google, but no luck. Situation: a freeradius server (debian stretch, 3.0.12+dfsg-5+deb9u1) binded to a Samba AD domain (so using EAP, PEAP, MSCHAPv2). I've some 'non human' clients that typically i connect via direct password insertion in users and huntgroups, eg: lp_hpcljm452-1 Cleartext-Password := "unknown;-)", MS-CHAP-Use-NTLM-Auth := 0, Expiration := "Dec 31 2030 19:00:00", Huntgroup-Name == "lp_hpcljm452-1" lp_hpcljm452-1 Calling-Station-Id == "60-6D-C7-27-C1-C9" But this client (an HP Color LaserJet M452nw) claim to have support for PEAP, LEAP and EAP-TLS, not explicitly citing MSCHAPv2. How to copy all EAP Request Attributes to internal server?

hello, An external request must be used on the internal server to transfer Attributes from the internal server to the REST module. Until now, we copied Attributes one by one. example) &Calling-Station-Id = &outer.request:Calling-Station-Id &Called-Station-Id = &outer.request:Called-Station-Id No problem. But now we are in a situation where we have to use all Attributes. So what I tried &request = &outer.request All Attributes were copied, but authentication could not be completed because Attributes that should not have been copied were also copied. (EAP session-related properties) Other than the method just mentioned, there are only two methods that I know of. 1. As in the example, specify all Attributes one by one. 2. Change the copy_request_to_tunnel option of the EAP module to “yes”. Option 1 is the least desirable method. If it becomes necessary to add an attribute, a restart of FreeRADIUS is required. 2. It's the simplest method, but the documentation says "use it only for compatibility reasons." I got the "don't use it" feeling here. I don't know the exact reason, but it's probably for security reasons. Is there a better way you know? Or is there no problem if I just use copy_request_to_tunnel ?

Comments on the recent XZ attack

The recent XZ back door (https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2024/03/29/4) highlighted issues with supply chain attacks on Open Source projects. The curl library has recently had a statement from its maintainer (https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2024/04/10/verified-curl/) I thought we should do the same. At FreeRADIUS, we take these attacks seriously, and have a number of measures in place to protect the source code. - Signed commits and releases Only a very small number of people have commit access to the git repo. These are people I've known for over a decade, and who I've met personally. The only way to get commit access is to be personally verified, and to be trusted, and to have a history of good code. All commits by the maintainers are PGP signed. Occasionally we merge GitHub PRs from third parties which aren't PGP signed. Those patches are only allowed if they can be trivially verified to be correct. We also PGP sign the release tarballs. Those files are generated internally on secure machines, and not on public-facing systems. - Generated files All autoconf generated files are committed to the source repository. This decision was made at the start of the FreeRADIUS project, and hasn't changed since. I recognize that this is largely an ideological issue. Many people believe that "generated files shouldn't be in git". I disagree strongly. The files are small and tracking them in git allows anyone to trivially check for manually mangled releases as was done in the XZ attack. On a similar note, see the Curl article for comments on "we're creating a docker file so that people can verify the generated files are correct". I believe it's simpler for everyone concerned to just commit the generated files. We then don't need to create docker images, or do anything else to verify that the generated files are correct: The files are in git, and are PGP signed. - Testing and Public PRs All releases are run through in-depth tests. We use static analysis tools to find a large number of problems. The git "master" branch has automated fuzzers which run every night. Any PRs from unknown people have to pass all of the tests in order to be committed. In many cases, the FreeRADIUS team rewrites the commit ourselves, and then closes the PR. This process helps keep the code clean, and safe. - Independence and Overload The XZ maintainer was vulnerable to social attacks due to being only one person, and being overloaded with work. At that point, it is tempting to bring new / unknown people on board to help. In contrast, FreeRADIUS has a business behind it: Network RADIUS. The company is operating well, and has a number of people to help share the work load. We are not going to be running out of engineering resources any time soon. - Conclusion As a result of all of the above, we believe that we are doing everything in our power to keep FreeRADIUS safe. The possibility of a supply-chain attack is very low, and we are aggressively watching for such attacks. Alan DeKok.

cache entry time

Hi The freeradius is used as radius proxy to proxy radius auth request to backend NPS server for MFA. The scenario we would like to achieve is the following: 1. client sends username/OTP to freeradius-proxy that relays to NPS server. NPS server accepts and replies to freeradius-proxy that relays to the client. 2. client sends same username/OTP within TTL to freeradius-proxy that accepts and replies to client. with the following config, I can make the scenario work, but I notice the cache entry TTL is timed when radius client sends radius auth request, not the time when user finishes OTP response. For example, user logins at 9:05:12AM and finish OTP/MFA at 9:05:34AM. The cache TTL is timed at 9:05:12AM. Which config should be adjusted to make the cache time correct?
