Hi there, I have a configuration which operates successfully with ‘use_tunneled_reply” set to yes. I am trying to remove the depreciated use_tunneled_reply in place of updating the outer.session-state but can’t seem to get it working. Users are not authorised after adjusting the config to the following… what am I missing? Happy to learn how to use it correctly / efficiently. What I am trying to do and why I am trying to do it: I am also very new to FreeRadius per se and I am in the middle of a server lifecycle. Our actual production servers run on version 3.0.12 and the new ones have version 3.0.26 installed. As we are an University with a lot of BYOD clients, we still support TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 and want to get rid of TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 in the near future. To know about the consequences, I would like to get a rough number of how many clients still using those old TLS versions. I know I can enable / increase the debug level in /etc/freeradius/3.0/radiusd.conf to see the TLS version used for all authentications, BUT this will fill up our logging partition pretty quick. *** What you expect the server to do: I would like to have a way to log the client TLS version used in /var/log/authz.log via the linelog module. failed memcached server handling

Hi Everyone, I am testing Freeradius v3.2.3 with cache module. the driver "rlm_cache_memcached". We plan to build a freeradius cluster with distributed memcached to cache user login status. During the test, I notice if memcached is offline, freeradius will either reject all new auth request or failed to start. The libmemcached document website is offline (http://docs.libmemcached.org) and I tried to search related information on google, but no luck. Fiddling with EAP types...

Situation: a freeradius server (debian stretch, 3.0.12+dfsg-5+deb9u1) binded to a Samba AD domain (so using EAP, PEAP, MSCHAPv2). I've some 'non human' clients that typically i connect via direct password insertion in users and huntgroups, eg: lp_hpcljm452-1 Cleartext-Password := "unknown;-)", MS-CHAP-Use-NTLM-Auth := 0, Expiration := "Dec 31 2030 19:00:00", Huntgroup-Name == "lp_hpcljm452-1" lp_hpcljm452-1 Calling-Station-Id == "60-6D-C7-27-C1-C9" But this client (an HP Color LaserJet M452nw) claim to have support for PEAP, LEAP and EAP-TLS, not explicitly citing MSCHAPv2. How to copy all EAP Request Attributes to internal server?

hello, An external request must be used on the internal server to transfer Attributes from the internal server to the REST module. Until now, we copied Attributes one by one. example) &Calling-Station-Id = &outer.request:Calling-Station-Id &Called-Station-Id = &outer.request:Called-Station-Id No problem. But now we are in a situation where we have to use all Attributes. So what I tried &request = &outer.request All Attributes were copied, but authentication could not be completed because Attributes that should not have been copied were also copied. (EAP session-related properties) Other than the method just mentioned, there are only two methods that I know of. 1. As in the example, specify all Attributes one by one. 2. Change the copy_request_to_tunnel option of the EAP module to “yes”. Option 1 is the least desirable method. If it becomes necessary to add an attribute, a restart of FreeRADIUS is required. 2. It's the simplest method, but the documentation says "use it only for compatibility reasons." I got the "don't use it" feeling here. I don't know the exact reason, but it's probably for security reasons. Is there a better way you know? Or is there no problem if I just use copy_request_to_tunnel ?

Comments on the recent XZ attack

The recent XZ back door (https://www.openwall.com/lists/oss-security/2024/03/29/4) highlighted issues with supply chain attacks on Open Source projects. The curl library has recently had a statement from its maintainer (https://daniel.haxx.se/blog/2024/04/10/verified-curl/) I thought we should do the same. At FreeRADIUS, we take these attacks seriously, and have a number of measures in place to protect the source code. - Signed commits and releases Only a very small number of people have commit access to the git repo. These are people I've known for over a decade, and who I've met personally. The only way to get commit access is to be personally verified, and to be trusted, and to have a history of good code. All commits by the maintainers are PGP signed. Occasionally we merge GitHub PRs from third parties which aren't PGP signed. Those patches are only allowed if they can be trivially verified to be correct. We also PGP sign the release tarballs. Those files are generated internally on secure machines, and not on public-facing systems. - Generated files All autoconf generated files are committed to the source repository. This decision was made at the start of the FreeRADIUS project, and hasn't changed since. I recognize that this is largely an ideological issue. Many people believe that "generated files shouldn't be in git". I disagree strongly. The files are small and tracking them in git allows anyone to trivially check for manually mangled releases as was done in the XZ attack. On a similar note, see the Curl article for comments on "we're creating a docker file so that people can verify the generated files are correct". I believe it's simpler for everyone concerned to just commit the generated files. We then don't need to create docker images, or do anything else to verify that the generated files are correct: The files are in git, and are PGP signed. - Testing and Public PRs All releases are run through in-depth tests. We use static analysis tools to find a large number of problems. The git "master" branch has automated fuzzers which run every night. Any PRs from unknown people have to pass all of the tests in order to be committed. In many cases, the FreeRADIUS team rewrites the commit ourselves, and then closes the PR. This process helps keep the code clean, and safe. - Independence and Overload The XZ maintainer was vulnerable to social attacks due to being only one person, and being overloaded with work. At that point, it is tempting to bring new / unknown people on board to help. In contrast, FreeRADIUS has a business behind it: Network RADIUS. The company is operating well, and has a number of people to help share the work load. We are not going to be running out of engineering resources any time soon. - Conclusion As a result of all of the above, we believe that we are doing everything in our power to keep FreeRADIUS safe. The possibility of a supply-chain attack is very low, and we are aggressively watching for such attacks. Alan DeKok.

cache entry time

Hi The freeradius is used as radius proxy to proxy radius auth request to backend NPS server for MFA. The scenario we would like to achieve is the following: 1. client sends username/OTP to freeradius-proxy that relays to NPS server. NPS server accepts and replies to freeradius-proxy that relays to the client. 2. client sends same username/OTP within TTL to freeradius-proxy that accepts and replies to client. with the following config, I can make the scenario work, but I notice the cache entry TTL is timed when radius client sends radius auth request, not the time when user finishes OTP response. For example, user logins at 9:05:12AM and finish OTP/MFA at 9:05:34AM. The cache TTL is timed at 9:05:12AM. Which config should be adjusted to make the cache time correct? EAP-TLS with ecdsa/eddsa

Hi all, we're running freeradius 3.0.27 with rsa certificates for years now. Since certificate renewal is scheduled now, we're planning to upgrade to ecdsa or even eddsa certificates. Will freeradius work with that? Cheers, Robert -- Robert Senger
