Reg: Freeradius 4.0 TACACS testing support
by shalini arivazhagan 10 Nov '23

10 Nov '23

Hi, I recently downloaded the 4.0 freeradius version to start my TACACS authentication. But I am facing an issue in authentication Added a new client in tacacs file. Add added a user<test> in the /etc/raddb/users file. But authentication is failed, it is giving error "No "known good" password found for user". Kindly help me on the TACACS testing. Where to add users for TACACS authentication in conf file. Thanks, Salini

Odd behavior on authentication
by Philip Prindeville 10 Nov '23

10 Nov '23

Hi, I had a test client (Ubuntu 22.04) set up, and I was running tcpdump on the server (also Ubuntu, running Freeradius 3.0). I had created a username & password on the Radius server, and if I tried to log into the client with those credentials, it failed. But as soon as I created a "cut out" on the client (same username, but '*' password in the shadow file), I could log in because the server was no longer rejecting the authorization request. I don't get it. How would the server know if there was a local user or not? Nothing in the messages seems to be different, other than the things you'd expect (the message id, and the random seed that the password gets hashed with). All other parts of the message looked to be identical. How was the client conveying to the server that there wasn't a local account present? Also, I've run "pam-auth-update --enable radius" to get pam_radius_auth.so plugged into the PAM stack, but how do I integrate it into /etc/nsswitch.conf as well? This is on Ubuntu so I don't have authconfig/authselect which are RedHat only. Thanks

deployment with two completely different sets of certificates
by Marek Zarychta 08 Nov '23

08 Nov '23

Dear List, I am considering use case with two completely different sets of certificates (different keys, certificates signed by different CAs). First, original set, will be used for clients without the realm and clients from old.realm. The new set, signed by well-know CA, will be used for TTLS-EAP and PEAP authentications only for the new.realm. If such a scenario requires deploying anther instance of FreeRADIUS, then please let me know, but most likely current instance could be configured to handle it. So far I have extended mods-enabled/eap and have there: eap eap1 { old realm / without realm settings } eap eap2 { new realm settings } eap { old realm / without realm settings } then added to sites-enabled/old.realm: if ((User-Name =~ /new\.realm$/) || ( Inner-Realm-Name =~ /new\.realm$/)) { update control { Auth-Type := eap2 } } but the authentications though successful, are still handled by eap1: (0) suffix: Checking for suffix after "@" (0) suffix: Looking up realm "new.realm" for User-Name = "anonymous(a)new.realm" (0) suffix: Found realm "new.realm" (0) suffix: Adding Stripped-User-Name = "anonymous" (0) suffix: Adding Realm = "new.realm" (0) suffix: Authentication realm is LOCAL (0) [suffix] = ok (0) eap1: Peer sent EAP Response (code 2) ID 130 length 29 (0) eap1: EAP-Identity reply, returning 'ok' so we can short-circuit the rest of authorize (0) [eap1] = ok (0) } # authorize = ok (0) Found Auth-Type = eap2 (0) Found Auth-Type = eap1 (0) ERROR: Warning: Found 2 auth-types on request for user 'anonymous' (0) # Executing group from file /usr/local/etc/raddb/sites-enabled/old.realm (0) authenticate { (0) eap1: Peer sent packet with method EAP Identity (1) (0) eap1: Calling submodule eap_peap to process data (0) eap_peap: (TLS) Initiating new session (0) eap1: Sending EAP Request (code 1) ID 131 length 6 (0) eap1: EAP session adding &reply:State = 0x16f700fc167419f8 (0) [eap1] = handled (0) } # authenticate = handled (0) Using Post-Auth-Type Challenge So I am stuck. Please, any clues helping to proceed this further will be appreciated. Cheers ! -- Marek Zarychta

FreeRADIUS CoA Proxy [invalid Message-Authenticator] in response
by Alexander Shulgin 31 Oct '23

31 Oct '23

I am trying to configure the coa proxy in latest Radius docker image 3.2.3. I have defined a client with a proper shared secret (message initiator) and also defined a home server with a shared secret (message destination). When I send the CoA message I see in debug that the radius server is proxying the request, the NAS at destination receiving it, it responds back to the radius server and then the radius server forwards that message back to the initiator. The problem is when I receive the final message from the radius server it has invalid message-authenticator. "Reply verification failed: Received packet from 192.168.2.157 with invalid Message-Authenticator! (Shared secret is incorrect.) I checked the shared secret on all sides, everything is as expected but somehow it signs the final message incorrectly. Thanks in advance. Attached is a debugfile of the freeradius And the request command and output is: echo " NAS-IP-Address = 192.168.2.224 Calling-Station-Id = 'BC:54:51:EF:70:AE' Event-Timestamp = $(date +%s) " | radclient -x 192.168.2.157:3799 disconnect testing123 Sent Disconnect-Request Id 7 from 0.0.0.0:33184 to 192.168.2.157:3799 length 51 NAS-IP-Address = 192.168.2.224 Calling-Station-Id = "BC:54:51:EF:70:AE" Event-Timestamp = "Oct 31 2023 13:29:27 MDT" (0) Reply verification failed: Received packet from 192.168.2.157 with invalid Message-Authenticator! OTP support - OATH compliant 2FA with freeradius
by Michael Hawkins 31 Oct '23

31 Oct '23

Hello all, Way back when, freeradius supported otp. Has that support been removed? What is it replaced with? Or, to put it another way. If I wanted to use some form of 2FA that used a server that was code running on a LINUX box, that was open source, that worked with freeradius, what might it be? The 2FA piece would support OATH compliant event (not time based) tokens - hardware or software. Many thanks, -- Michael A Hawkins Stamford, CT 06902 USA Mobile: 203-550-5502

Assuming that the FreeRADIUS configuration files have changed, will the hup command make the server reload its certificates, keys, etc.? Thanks.

Debugmode together with Kerberos
by Stefan Kania 30 Oct '23

Hi everybody, I have configured freeradius to use gssapi for authentication while searching the LDAP for users or hosts. Now I can't start the debugmode anymore. %{SQL-User-Name} parsing in authorize section - bug?
by Igor Smitran 30 Oct '23

30 Oct '23

Hi list, Have i found a bug or i have made a mistake in configuring freeradius, version 3.2.3 from networkradius ubuntu repo... When i put this into authorize section: authorize { ... # MAC LIMIT update control { Tmp-Integer-3 := "%{sql: SELECT count(*) FROM radcheck WHERE Username = '%{SQL-User-Name}' and (mac_limit='%{Calling-Station-Id}' or mac_limit='*');}" } ... } it doesn't work, SQL-User-Name is empty: (0) update control { (0) EXPAND %{User-Name} (0) --> testuser (0) SQL-User-Name set to 'testuser' rlm_sql (sql): Reserved connection (2) (0) Executing select query: SELECT count(*) FROM radcheck WHERE Username = '' and (mac_limit='' or mac_limit='*'); rlm_sql (sql): Released connection (2) (0) EXPAND %{sql: SELECT count(*) FROM radcheck WHERE Username = '%{SQL-User-Name}' and (mac_limit='%{Calling-Station-Id}' or mac_limit='*');} (0) --> 0 (0) Tmp-Integer-3 := 0 (0) } # update control = noop If User-Name is used instead of SQL-User-Name it works: authorize { ... # MAC LIMIT update control { Tmp-Integer-3 := "%{sql: SELECT count(*) FROM radcheck WHERE Username = '%{User-Name}' and (mac_limit='%{Calling-Station-Id}' or mac_limit='*');}" } ... } (0) update control { rlm_sql (sql): Reserved connection (2) rlm_sql (sql): Released connection (2) (0) EXPAND %{User-Name} (0) --> testuser (0) SQL-User-Name set to 'testuser' rlm_sql (sql): Reserved connection (3) (0) Executing select query: SELECT count(*) FROM radcheck WHERE Username = 'testuser' and (mac_limit='' or mac_limit='*'); rlm_sql (sql): Released connection (3) (0) EXPAND %{sql: SELECT count(*) FROM radcheck WHERE Username = '%{User-Name}' and (mac_limit='%{Calling-Station-Id}' or mac_limit='*');} (0) --> 1 (0) Tmp-Integer-3 := 1 (0) } # update control = noop It looks like SQL-User-Name population is done after authorize is processed, i am not sure. Everywhere else i am able to use SQL-User-Name, including queris.conf. But, not in authorize. Please correct me if i am wrong. I would appreciate any help. If it's my error than even better. It's not so big problem, but it's annoying. Same setup works in 2.1 but not in 3.0 and 3.2 Thank you, Igor Smitran

Allow requests even if the MAC is not allowed?
by Florian Traxler (mieX GmbH) 30 Oct '23

30 Oct '23

Hello! Can you allow requests via DHCP in FreeRadius 3.0.20 even if the MAC is not allowed? Example: () sql: --> SELECT id, username, attribute, value, op FROM radcheck WHERE username = '00:00:00:AA:BB:CC' ORDER BY id () sql: Executing select query: SELECT id, username, attribute, value, op FROM radcheck WHERE username = '00:00:00:AA:BB:CC' ORDER BY id () sql: WARNING: User not found in radcheck table. Can I still assign an IP from the IP pool to this MAC? Thanks
