I am trying to confirm my configuration is valid. I am using winbind with
Freeradius to auth against AD using PEAP/MSCHAPv2. Below is the
'freeradius -X' output from the following commands. It seems like radtest
works fine but eapol_test does not. I'm assuming it is a problem with my
eap configuration, but I'm stumped:
radtest -t mschap x19a19 ****** 128.180.1.12 0 cisco99
eapol_test -c eapoltest.conf -a 128.180.1.12 -scisco99 -M00:0a:cd:31:6c:b4
-N4:x:0x80B40A0A -o radiuscert.out

AD authentication fails - plaintext auth succeeds but challenge/response fails
by Kev Xlr 16 Aug '19
by Kev Xlr 16 Aug '19
16 Aug '19
I am configuring FreeRADIUS for MSCHAP authentication against our Active
Directory domain, following the guides on
http://deployingradius.com/documents/configuration/active_directory.html
and
https://wiki.freeradius.org/guide/FreeRADIUS-Active-Directory-Integration-H…
When I get to the point to run wbinfo -a user%password as detailed in the
wiki, wbinfo returns the response:
plaintext password authentication succeeded
challenge/response password authentication failed
Could not authenticate user %user with challenge/response
This is the opposite of the expected behaviour, as AD should fail plaintext
password auth and ALLOW challenge/response password auth!
Obviously FreeRADIUS PAP works but any MSCHAP tests fail because there is
no challenge/response
I checked all samba and winbind logs but I cannot find anywhere in the logs
referring to such tests and failures
Where should I direct my troubleshooting?
Thanks

Hi,
We currently have our users authenticating via ntlm_auth and would like
to make authorization decisions based on group membership. The radius
server is joined to the domain and standard Unix commands calling
getpwnam will return expected data:
# id user.name
uid=123456789(user.name) gid=234567890(domain users)
groups=234567890(domain
users),345679012(noc),4567890123(vpm),5678901234(ipmi)
Looking at various modules available to handle this I'm encountering the
following problems with each (usual caveats about how I may be
misreading the docs):
rlm_pam: appears to only be set up to work for authentication
rlm_passwd: appears to want a file
rlm_unix: also appears to want a file to read? (maybe?)
I'm hoping one of these above or perhaps something else can be used in
the authorize section such that if a user logs in, and that user's group
membership includes the required group (say, ipmi), then the
authorization will be accepted. It's just not clear to me how to proceed
here.

What's the recommended way to achieve this?
I need to alter outer and inner identity:
- if outer identity is empty then alter it to "anon(a)domain.tld"
- if a domain is missing in inner identity then add it (so username will
become username(a)domain.tld)
I already tried this for outer identity:
operator_name = "domain.tld"
authorize {
linelog_recv_request
split_username_nai
if (noop || !&Stripped-User-Domain) {
#reject
update request {
Stripped-User-Domain := "${operator_name}"
Stripped-User-Name := "anon"
}
}
I am getting ERROR: EAP-Identity Unknown.

I configured the winbind and joined it to the AD domain
I configured Freeradius to use mschap with ntlm_auth to authenticate the
users from AD
This worked fine.
I am now trying to configure the system to only allow authentication if a
user belongs to a specific group on AD
Below is my config that I added to the /etc/raddb/sites-enabled/default
file in the post-auth section
----- ----- snip ----- -----
# Post-Authentication
# Once we KNOW that the user has been authenticated, there are
# additional steps we can take.
post-auth {
if (Group == "Store_WiFi_Access") {
noop
}
else {
reject
}
#
# If you need to have a State attribute, you can
# add it here. e.g. for later CoA-Request with
# State, and Service-Type = Authorize-Only.

I am getting the following in the radiusd -X output

I need to find out why am I getting this message in the debug output
{Failed resolving GID: No error}
And if I am using the wrong variable to determine the AD group { if (Group
== "Store_WiFi_Access")}
I checked the OS /var/log/messages file to see if there is a clue why this
is failing but nothing is written to this file.
Any help will be helpful at the moment.

Good Day
I have a freeradius with monthly reset users, when their data is depleted, they are denied login.
I wanted to implement a top-up system, so that they can purchase additional data when this happens.
The additional data should only get used if the monthly data is depleted ad should also rollover.
Is there a way to do this with freeradius and sql_counter or do I need to look at something else?

After moved from freeradius v2 to freeradius v3 we have noticed some
strange issue - radius service receives extra characters from nas
client. For example, I am trying to authenticate on 10.56.36.33 host
as user 'user' with password 'Password', but according to radius log
it receives 'Password\000]\n'. Could you help me to find what is
wrong?
Here is radiusd -X output:

I'm adding a second eap module instance to a virtual server to handle eap-tls with a different root CA, like this:
authorize {
...
eap-tls
eap {
ok = return
updated = return
}
...
}
authenticate {
...
Auth-Type eap-tls {
...
}
Auth-Type eap {
...
}
...
}
eap-tls returns 'invalid' if the client NAK's eap-tls, which causes a reject to be sent to PEAP users, so I need to change (or ignore) how 'invalid' is handled.
Is the right way to get it to fall through to the other eap module to override 'invalid', or do I need to be looking at the failover/group functionality? Or is what I want just not possible due to the client sending a NAK?
Many thanks,
Adam Bishop

Greets! This a little FR-related, and a bit more system advice-related.
The end result is possibly to implement on FR, of course.
I typically implement FR in an EAP-TLS (note just TLS, not tunneled-TLS)
scenario where client certificates are manually installed on the
supplicants (such as tablets) because I have the luxury of controlling
that. It works fine and although it may not be a perfect practice if
revoking is necessary, it makes the deployment and control for field
personnel consistent and dependable. It keeps by blood pressure low,
which is amazing for IT components.
I have a different situation where the installation has a lot of
transient supplicants (guest staff coming and going) and the connection
path was simply to go WPA and share the key (via secure post-it, of
course) with that guest staff. I don't love this setup, but it does
work. If the key becomes compromised, we have to go in and change in
each NAS (the access points / NAS are Cisco autonomous AP's - no WAP
since they are spread out further and across different logical nets). I
have a little automatic script that can do this, but it ends up giving
the script administrative access to the NAS's so it's a possible
security concern.
To make matters worse, I will be leaving the setup after it is done, and
I have a concern that certificates may expire after my departure causing
a traditional EAP-TTLS option to fail, else that would also be an option.
Is there a practical configuration to set up the AP's (not sure if
EAP-TTLS can be re-written to ignore certificates, just use a
username/password?) to create a system that would generate a [daily]
random password that could be given to a guest staff, for which they can
quickly enter and gain access, but that credential changes on a
recurring basis? I can write the credential assignment portion
separately, and store it in db/file for FR, but it's the config of FR
that I don't know about.
I recall having visited some other vendor sites that had a captive
portal that did a similar thing, but I think they did that at the L3
level, not at the initial AAA level on the NAS. (As in the wireless was
completely open, and they controlled routing, not connection). Since I
would have a working FR setup, I would prefer to not need to have
another application layer to handle just one client purpose.
I'm sure this will bring on lots of "you're doing it so wrong" replies,
but go ahead anyway.
Many thanks,
Ted.

Hi
I am busy setting up a freeradius system on CentOS7 , I can authenticate
any AD user but want to only Authenticate if user belongs to a certain AD
group
I found this Thread where it explained that winbind module in Freeradius
can do it
http://freeradius.1045715.n5.nabble.com/Checking-Active-Directory-group-mem…
----- snip --------
Usage is similar to rlm_ldap. Enable the winbind module in
mods-enabled, then you can:
if (Winbind-Group == "my-user-group") {
...
}
for an instance of rlm_winbind e.g.
------- snip---------
I have the repo provided freeradius and samba and winbind installed and
can't seem to find the winbind module it are referring to.....
[root@freeradpoc ~]# rpm -qa | grep freeradius
freeradius-doc-3.0.13-10.el7_6.x86_64
freeradius-utils-3.0.13-10.el7_6.x86_64
freeradius-3.0.13-10.el7_6.x86_64
freeradius-krb5-3.0.13-10.el7_6.x86_64
freeradius-ldap-3.0.13-10.el7_6.x86_64
[root@freeradpoc ~]# rpm -qa | grep samba
samba-common-4.8.3-4.el7.noarch
samba-winbind-modules-4.8.3-4.el7.x86_64
samba-client-libs-4.8.3-4.el7.x86_64
samba-client-4.8.3-4.el7.x86_64
samba-libs-4.8.3-4.el7.x86_64
samba-winbind-clients-4.8.3-4.el7.x86_64
samba-common-libs-4.8.3-4.el7.x86_64
samba-common-tools-4.8.3-4.el7.x86_64
samba-4.8.3-4.el7.x86_64
samba-winbind-4.8.3-4.el7.x86_64
[root@freeradpoc ~]#
Is this maybe due to the repo provided packages that I used...?
