Hi, FR-team!
*
*A while ago I installed FR 3.0.19 on Ubuntu 19.04.(ntlm_auth)
The school which is using this implementation for WLAN access has a very
basic use model. They need
authentification functionality only.
Question is: Is there an urgent need (e.g. security, new hot
functionality,...) to upgrade to 3.0.22?
Or do you think 3.0.19 is still good enough?
Thanks
Uwe

HI!
If I set
ENV {
LDAPNOINIT = '1'
}
in radiusd.conf will this env var be set before libldap gets loaded via
rlm_ldap.so and initialized?
Background:
Setting LDAPNOINIT to any value will prevent OpenLDAP's libldap to read
any default settings from a system-wide ldap.conf (see man page
ldap.conf(5)). This ensures that only LDAP settings in the FreeRADIUS
config will be used.
Of course I can also set this in the systemd unit. But for those not
using systemd this would even be a nice better default.
Ciao, Michael.

Hi,
We're implementing containerised Freeradius servers on AWS which we intend
to scale horizontally to accommodate current load. We use ECS Fargate and
currently have 6 servers running behind a Network Load balancer. Each of
these servers have exactly the same configuration and connect to a
centralised RDS database.
We've tested this setup and it's all looking successful. Ran performance
tests using eapol_test pointed at the load balancer. The fear was that
authentication requests could be broken up and fail when distributed
incorrectly to the containers. This seems to not be an issue because of a
concept known as the "UDP Flow" (
https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/containers/aws-fargate-now-supports-udp-load-b…)
with AWS Network load balancers.
For extra assurance on this proof of concept, I wanted to check if anyone
is aware any potential pitfalls with this design that I might be missing?
It looks like the Radius servers don't keep much state in memory (beyond
eap sessions), which would be a problem. Beyond that, does this
architecture design sound feasible?
Thanks,
Emile

Hi,
I plan to implement accounting logic with the help of perl module.
Looks simple, but every time I should open new database connection which is not very effective in case of high load systems.
sub accounting {
$redis = Redis->new(server => '127.0.0.1:6379', reconnect => 2);
...
Is there way to make some sort of "shared" variable in perl module?
P.S. Maybe there is even some way to create some buffer array variable inside perl module which persists between perl modules so I can drop redis?

Imagine if the Windows CTRL-ALT-DEL login screen, in addition to the username/password fields, also had a field for you to enter an "ALIAS". You then login Windows with your username, but what gets logged in the Security event logs and/or Domain Controller was NOT your username, but the bogus name you entered for the Alias. Your login would be untraceable, and some security admins would go ballistic.
This is exactly what is happening with freeradius. It's a scenario similar to what was reported in http://lists.freeradius.org/pipermail/freeradius-users/2021-March/099613.ht…, but worse.
See this screenshot showing the WiFi settings on an Android phone (https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-vQJqzB) If the WiFi network supports PEAP, in addition to their login credentials users can enter an "Anonymous identity". Unbelievably, if someone does that, what gets logged by freeradius is NOT their login username used to authenticate, but the bogus "Anonymous identity" they entered.
I can login via WiFi with my credentials, but enter the username of *another* employee in the "Anonymous identity". If I do this, the *other* employee's username will be logged in the radacct table, and in syslog there will be a "login ok" for the *other* user. I can then perform whatever nefarious acts I want, knowing that my FramedIPAddress will be logged in radacct in the record for the *other* user. The *other* user will thus be investigated and possibly be jailed as all logs will point to them, not me.
This post is two-fold.
First - AWARENESS. Admins need to be made aware that the information in syslog and in the radacct table can easily be faked - the usernames you see being logged are NOT necessarily the real usernames used to authenticate in your environments. You cannot rely on that data alone during audits/reports/investigations.
Second - for the freeradius developers. freeradius is a very valid product that offers a lot of flexibility, but it's seriously lacking in auditing. I'm not disputing the RFCs that allow for inner/outer identities, and the fact that freeradius can be configured to require them to be the same. But you as as developers don't get to tell sysadmins "you should require them to be the same and if you don't it's your fault". The RFCs allow for that, and if business requirements allow them to be different freeradius needs to deal with it. Basic security practices require applications to log and record the account used to authenticate. freeradius is NOT doing that. Freeradius must, out-of-the-box, log and audit all parameters used to login, meaning it needs to capture and log *both* the inner and outer identities, along with the certificate details if certs are used to login. Just like we did with the lack of logging for certificates in the other post, I'm sure we'll be able to address and fix this issue as well. But this (not logging the correct authenticating username) should have never been allowed to happen. You can't have a product that is used to authenticate a variety of devices NOT log the login information unless admins make complex changes to database schema and get creative with config files in order to log and audit basic authentication data that should be logged by default.
Now to the details.
Below are these are the relevant entries you'll see with freeradius -X when authenticating with the settings as seen in the screenshot:

====================================================
FYI there is one single item that may be used to see that something is wrong if you're collecting syslogs. In addition to the entry showing the *other" username and the MAC address used to cross-reference and validate the radacct table:
Login OK: [HACKER] (from client 10.252.59.26 port 8 cli 60-a1-0a-89-12-34)
There will be a vague entry without any corresponding entry in the radacct table, and with no MAC address that can be used as a reference:
Login OK: [roberto] (from client 10.252.59.26 port 0 via TLS tunnel)
So if you either read this post or are a very thorough investigator and do not trust your radacct table (you shouldn't), you will see that at around the same time that HACKER logged in, there is also an event showing my real login used to login (but without any other useful information). That should prevent the victim I tried to blame from going to jail for reasonable doubt, but it will not prove that I am the true culprit.

Alan, thank you very much for you help. Problem solved!
My mistake was not knowing that, for the SQL module to consider Cleartext-Password, all other attributes had to exist.
In this particular case, in order for the Calling-Station-Id attribute to be passed into the inner-tunnel, I also had to make changes to the EAP module:
copy_request_to_tunnel = yes
use_tunneled_reply = yes
After that, I changed the Calling-Station-Id to 00-27-22-A2-07-C5 within MySQL and everything worked!
Thank you so much again!

We are migrating from NPS to FreeRADIUS this summer for our eduroam
wireless network. During a transition period I need to proxy clients using
the old configuration to the NPS servers. I am doing this based on outer
identity - the old config lacks outer identity configuration while the new
one specifies anonymous-202106. This is the logic from the outer tunnel
authorize section:
if (&User-Name == "anonymous-202106" || &User-Name == "
anonymous-202106(a)stolaf.edu" || &User-Name == "STOAD\anonymous-202106") {
# Authenticate the request locally
noop
} elsif (&User-Name =~ /stolaf\.edu/ || &User-Name =~ /STOAD/) {
update {
control:Proxy-To-Realm := 'nps_servers'
request:Operator-Name := "1${operator_name}"
}
return
}
The above works well for our old and new client configs. (There is some
additional logic not shown for the case of eduroam guests.)
We have one local realm, stolaf.edu. If I configure this as a realm in
proxy.conf, FR tries to authenticate all requests, from old and new
clients. If I comment it out, I do not get a realm in my log messages for
local authentications (i.e. new clients).
Is my approach above sound? Is there a better way of achieving the above
goal using realm config or something else?
Thanks!

Hello, need some help.
I have one Ubiquiti using EAP-TTLS MSCHAPV2 auth. I´m using username and password. My radcheck table looks like this:
SCENARIO 1:
mysql> SELECT id, username, attribute, value, op FROM radcheck WHERE username = 'mmd13' ORDER BY id;
+-------+----------+--------------------+--------+----+

I have no problem to find Cleartext-Password in MySQL:

Now, with two rows in radcheck, SQL returns different:

I got just "(4) sql: User found in radcheck table" but "Conditional check items matched, merging assignment check items" and "Cleartext-password" are missing.
Since there are no Cleartext-password, MSCHAP fails: "(4) mschap: ERROR: FAILED: No NT/LM-Password. Cannot perform authentication".
I really need to have Calling-Station-Id and Cleartext-Password into radcheck table.
Requests 0 to 3 are the same into SCENARIO 1 and 2. The difference is in request 4 only.
It seems to me that MySQl does not see the attribute Cleartext-password when it is accompanied by another attribute.
How do I change this behavior?
Below is the output of the freeradius -X command with the first four packages (SCENARIO 2).
Thank you very much

Fabricio Viana

Hi,
since the update from 3.0.19 to 3.0.22 we have problems with our clients
configured using sql. They get ignored by the virtual servers.
Adding to the global list seems to work fine:
rlm_sql (sql): Adding client 127.0.0.2 (testclient) to global clients list
rlm_sql (127.0.0.2): Client "testclient" (sql) added
rlm_sql (sql): Adding client 127.0.0.3 (testclient) to global clients list
rlm_sql (127.0.0.3): Client "testclient" (sql) added
rlm_sql (sql): Adding client 127.0.0.4 (testclient) to global clients list
rlm_sql (127.0.0.4): Client "testclient" (sql) added
But the request of these clients are ignored:
Ignoring request to auth address * port 1812 bound to server default
from unknown client 127.0.0.4 port 35289 proto udp
Ready to process requests
Ignoring request to auth address * port 1812 bound to server default
from unknown client 127.0.0.3 port 43190 proto udp
Ready to process requests
Shouldn't global clients be used in every virtual server?
I double checked, that we don't configure clients anywhere else (only
using sql module). So there should be no override.
Any ideas?
Kind regards,
Enno

We use LDAP-groups (from AD, if that matters) to map
radius-reply-items for general network access on switches, routers,
optical gear, etc. Each vendor is their own special flower so needs
its own thing.
The way we're handling this currently is in post-auth where we specify
reply-items per group using if/elseif/else per
https://networkradius.com/doc/3.0.10/unlang/keywords.html.
This works great if things are simple - you're a member of one group
or another. However, we've not yet gotten it to work if one is a
member of multiple groups, and to have each group match and get
reply-items from each.
Example of now:
if (LDAP-Group == "network-administrators") {
update reply {
cisco-avpair = "shell:priv-lvl=15",
Service-Type = "6",
Juniper-Local-User-Name = "superuser",
PaloAlto-Admin-Role = "superuser",
}
}
elsif (LDAP-Group == "network-users") {
update reply {
cisco-avpair = "shell:priv-lvl=1",
Juniper-Local-User-Name = "op",
PaloAlto-Admin-Role = "devicereader",
}
}
else {
reject
}
Note that this will do a single match and bail out of the if
statement. What we'd like to do is to keep matching accumulatively.
The use case is per above it's layer2/3 devices, we'd like to add some
other types of gear to the list where someone in the above groups
shouldnt have access to, but someone in network-administrators AND
$othergroup should have access to.
Per Unlang, it looks like there is a case/switch statement but I
believe we'd be hitting the same limitation there.
