This morning our freeradius server that is doing authentication for our
wireless network suddenly started generating the following messages.
Our users hare having trouble authenticating to the wireless. It would
appear to me that something is stalling and possibly causing
authentication to time out. Radius is configured to use our LDAP
(389ds) servers as the back end database. Initially I thought that the
radius server was having trouble talking to the LDAP servers but I'm
able query the LDAP servers from the command line using ldapsearch. In
addition we have 4 load balanced servers and from what I can tell it is
not stalling on the LDAP queries and neither are any of the other
services that use LDAP. The log messages seem to suggest that the
rlm_radutmp module is the one blocking. I've deleted and the radius
server has recreated the radutmp file as well as the radwtmp and radacct
directories. The radius server is supporting about 650 Wireless access
points serving about 2000-3000 end user devices. So I though perhaps we
were simply overloading the server resources. So I doubled the CPU
cores and quadrupled the available memory with no change. The system
has been functioning correctly for several months but we are a school
and the students came back this week so the load would have increased.
Any ideas what might be happening?
We are running version 3.0.15 under RHEL 7.5.

Hi Elias,
If your concern is about to authenticate devices (smartphones) and not
users for sure (think of stolen phones), Client certificates should do
the job.
EAP-TLS seems to be suitable and is ready to use with a FreeRadius Fresh
install as I know (I don't use).
Note for EAP-TTLS:
You should not use PAP under TTLS as a Radius admin can see users
passwords in debug mode (and even log them).
I prefer challenges based methods (eg. MSCHAPv2) for user interactive auths.

At first our freeradius server will be configured for authentication of
smartphones from our wifi network. My intent is to try and configure each
client to have their own certificate for the connection.
Scenario 1 (in tests)
I already have a scenario with EAP-PEAP where the client downloads the CA,
installs it on his smartphone and connects, but as we know, if he does not
select the CA at the time of connection, he will still be able to connect.
In this way we are in the hands of the user's "willingness" to use the CA,
even informing the danger of not using the CA.
Scenario 2 (intended)
As mentioned above, I would like a scenario where the client had its own
certificate and the radius server verified this certificate in
authentication. If it is signed by the CA of the server, it authenticates,
otherwise, not.
For scenario 2, what is the best method?

Hello,
I've recently been tasked with configuring a brand new FreeRADIUS server to work with our core routers, using a spare machine for testing purposes until we can replace our entire setup. I'm a Debian man, so I'm using the latest version available in Debian Stable:

I've already gotten most of it working, but one thing I discovered is that the routers (Redbacks, as it happens) made /two/ RADIUS calls -- one to establish the circuit, then another to authenticate the connecting user.
The circuit identifies itself with a User-Name formed by 'router-name'.'slot'.'port'.'circuit ID' -- so in the case of the connection coming in on Dot1q circuit 393 of port 1 of the card in the second physical slot, the User-Name attribute is 'rb1-am-spare.2.1.393' -- and the static password of 'Redback'.
Now since we've got quite a few users, my first instinct was to move as much of the check and reply attributes into radgroupcheck and radgroupreply to avoid having to enter the same data for every user in the list. However, for some reason I can't seem to track down the system doesn't actually add the attributes from those tables even though it claims to see them.

As you can see, it correctly identifies that the user is in group 'circuits' and claims to merge the reply items, however, the Access-Accept packet contains no attributes.

Hi,
Is it possible to authenticate a client with PEAP-MSCHAPv2 when I store
the password in a MySQL database as SHA512 hash.
Or is there another way to authenticate the client? The password should
be stored as SHA512 hash.
The client supports EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS, LEAP and PEAP and for phase 2:
PEAP-MSCHAPv2 and PEAP-TLS or EAP-TTLS with CHAP, MSCHAP, MSCHAPv2, PAP
and MD5

I have updated a Freeradius 2.x system to a fresh 3.0.16 build (new
hardware/os from the ground up)
We make use of huntgroups and DEFAULT entries in the files to set L2TP
tunnel forwarding when required or sql to apply a full user profile else.
On 3.0.16 I am seeing that a request that matches a DEFAULT entry within
files (which accepts with assorted tunnel attributes) is also then using
the sql module and merging the attributes rather than not processing the SQL
if the files section matches.
Have I missed a change in behaviour between 2.x and 3.0.x ?
In the debug I can see the match in users.then it also calls sql.

Tried it but still I get access denied. Looking into the debug log I can understand that the
Access-Accept has changed to 0, and the Class is 0x3334.
Regarding the Access-Accept I don't know what to do, but I think that I know what to do with
the Class. If I understand it right the value that the debug log shows is the ASCII translation of 34.
Is it possible that the users file should indicate the Class value in hex format ?

According to what I sniff, a Access-Accept (2) with Attribute Value Pair (AVP)
With l=3 Class:34
The Class is the one that changes the privileges of my users. In my case the values of this Class are 34/32/31
How can I set the Server to send an Access-Accept with the values above

Hi to you all I am sending this message again only this time with the full debug info.
I am a QA Engineer and my concern is to make sure that the "boxes" that I test cooperate with the most popular RADIUS Server.
According to other RADIUS Server that I have tested with before, I manage to authenticate a user that performs a login into our boxes.
I simply defined a Default (name of the client/group) with a secret and a vendor that is general (ietf)
then I defined 3 users (one for each of my privileges: admin\read&write\read-only). Each user has two attributes:
1. User_Password with a type of Check the Value is the password string
2. Class with a type of Success-Reply which controls the priveleges of the users. The Value is an integer (4/2/1)
The debug log below shows a login try that I performed with a user "moshe" and password "moshe"
I have set FreeRadius like this:
1. I added the clients.conf file the following client
client 10.0.1.0/8<http://10.0.1.0/8> {
secret = test
nastype = other
}
2. I added a user into the users file
moshe Cleartext-Password := "moshe"
Service-Type = "6"
3. The radius.conf was set with the following log {} settings
auth = yes
auth-goodpass = yes
with all of that said I can also tell the radius.log show that the Login attempts are OK but I still
get Access denied from my device, like something is still missing.
Can you please tell me what might be missing ? Thanks for the support
I assume that I am missing some kind of reply from the server side. At the same time I need the server to identify the right privileges (4/2/1)
according to the user definitions

According to what I sniff, a Access-Accept (2) with Attribute Value Pair (AVP)
With l=3 Class:34
The Class is the one that changes the privileges of my users. In my case the values of this Class are 34/32/31
How can I set the Server to send an Access-Accept with the values above

Hi to you all I am sending this message again only this time with the full debug info.
I am a QA Engineer and my concern is to make sure that the "boxes" that I test cooperate with the most popular RADIUS Server.
According to other RADIUS Server that I have tested with before, I manage to authenticate a user that performs a login into our boxes.
I simply defined a Default (name of the client/group) with a secret and a vendor that is general (ietf)
then I defined 3 users (one for each of my privileges: admin\read&write\read-only). Each user has two attributes:
1. User_Password with a type of Check the Value is the password string
2. Class with a type of Success-Reply which controls the priveleges of the users. The Value is an integer (4/2/1)
The debug log below shows a login try that I performed with a user "moshe" and password "moshe"
I have set FreeRadius like this:
1. I added the clients.conf file the following client
client 10.0.1.0/8<http://10.0.1.0/8> {
secret = test
nastype = other
}
2. I added a user into the users file
moshe Cleartext-Password := "moshe"
Service-Type = "6"
3. The radius.conf was set with the following log {} settings
auth = yes
auth-goodpass = yes
with all of that said I can also tell the radius.log show that the Login attempts are OK but I still
get Access denied from my device, like something is still missing.
Can you please tell me what might be missing ? Thanks for the support
I assume that I am missing some kind of reply from the server side. At the same time I need the server to identify the right privileges (4/2/1)
according to the user definitions
