ARTICLE: 8 things you might be doing wrong with RADIUS
by Network RADIUS 16 Jul '21

16 Jul '21

** The 8 most common RADIUS mistakes --------------------------------------------- We see a lot of questions on this mailing list and from our clients that boil down to “RADIUS isn’t working. Can you tell me why?”. Most of the time, the problem isn’t with RADIUS itself, it is with the supporting infrastructure, or with less than ideal network administration practices. Many of these issues aren’t necessarily self-evident so we wanted to outline the most common mistakes and tell you how to avoid them. The good news is that most of these practices don’t cost much in terms of money or time to do correctly. The other good news is that they can make the difference between catastrophic failure and a minor inconvenience. The bad news is that most people don’t follow these practices. Network RADIUS is a private, for-profit company founded by Alan DeKok which provides commercial support for FreeRADIUS. The Network RADIUS team has been the primary contributor to FreeRADIUS for the last 20 years. The FreeRADIUS mailing list, wiki, and documentation are all moderated and maintained by the Network RADIUS team. FreeRADIUS has always been, and will always continue to be, open source. The Network RADIUS team provides commercial support to paying clients, and free product development for the FreeRADIUS community at large. All of our software development for FreeRADIUS is integrated into the Open Source platform, and will always continue to be.

I have installed FreeRADIUS 3.0.22 for the first time and run into an issue. Although it loads clients, it does not recognize them as valid NASes. This is my debug output. How to Integrate NAS MSCHAP x FreeRadius
by Paulo Roberto Tomasi 14 Jul '21

14 Jul '21

Hi, I'm trying to configure FreeRadius to control Mikrotik logins (Winbox, SSH, Telnet, etc) + integration with Windows Active Directory After a lot of searching about LDAP config I was able to get an Access-Accept from AD Server using radtest: root@lab-01:~# radtest -x paulo pass@777 127.0.0.1 0 testing123 Sent Access-Request Id 45 from 0.0.0.0:44663 to 127.0.0.1:1812 length 75 User-Name = "paulo" User-Password = "pass@777" NAS-IP-Address = 127.0.1.1 NAS-Port = 0 Message-Authenticator = 0x00 Cleartext-Password = "pass@777" Received Access-Accept Id 45 from 127.0.0.1:1812 to 0.0.0.0:0 length 20 User-Name "paulo" is an AD user # My NAS (Mikrotik) is trying to authenticate against FreeRadius, but it sends a MS-CHAP-Challenge in its logs: sending Access-Request with id 23 to 172.x.x.70:1812 Signature = 0x00fbf419a1a52d28f3b7479a72eeda9c Service-Type = 1 User-Name = "paulo" MS-CHAP-Challenge = 0x728c84707e975a66640bfd9bd4d2ed98 MS-CHAP2-Response = 0x00004b64c3ae410e919c1adaf9ab1ea6 cf8700000000000000000cc476370d07 263c4c707bfb1e9cf52ac40b5ea6d6eb 230d Calling-Station-Id = "10.x.x.253" NAS-Identifier = "Mikrotik-1218" NAS-IP-Address = 172.16.12.18 # Then freeradius -X command gives me those warnings and errors: (0) pap: WARNING: No "known good" password found for the user. Re: PEAP/MSCHAPv2 with FreeRADIUS vs NPS
by Joe Garcia 13 Jul '21

Alan DeKok <aland(a)deployingradius.com> writes: >Which one? The client? A no-name embedded one used with SCADA devices that have to be controlled from central servers. If it was up to me they'd just be FreeRADIUS, but unfortunately some have to be NPS since there's lots of different vendors involved. >NPS is weird. If the NPS admins want to do PEAP, then they should do PEAP. >Sending a different magic EAP type is just stupid. Agreed :-). I don't think it's the admins though, they've configured it to do PEAP and as far as they're aware that's what they're getting, it's NPS that's adding the strangeness. >You'll need to look at the full log from eapol_test to see why it works. Already done that, we've taken Wireshark captures, the eapol_test and FreeRADIUS logs, and diagnostics from the client, and made things identical to what eapol_test sends (as far as we can tell, there may be stuff inside the PEAP tunnel that we can't see and aren't not aware of). We've really tried everything we can think of, so it may be a case of someone seeing this and remembering some obscure magic they used to get it to work. >I can't find anything in wpa_supplicant which handles a magic Microsoft EAP >type. So it's not clear what's going on there. What wpa_supplicant does is ignore the message and re-send the Identity Response it's just sent, which continues the negotiation. This is one of the bits that reverse-engineering the flow from eapol_test/wpa_supplicant helped with. So for anyone else who's faced with this, when doing PEAP/MSCHAPv2 with NPS, when you're expecting to get the MSCHAPv2 Challenge if instead you get an EAP vendor-specific undocumented Microsoft blob back, re-send the Identity Response a second time and then you'll get the MSCHAPv2 Challenge you should have got the first time. PEAP/MSCHAPv2 with FreeRADIUS vs NPS
by Joe Garcia 13 Jul '21

13 Jul '21

This is possibly more an NPS question than a FreeRADIUS one but possibly someone here might know what to do, we're using a third-party embedded RADIUS client to authenticate to both FreeRADIUS and NPS with PEAP/MSCHAPv2. The client is sending completely standard PEAP messages to both, but while the exchange with FreeRADIUS works fine, with NPS it's rejected with either Reason Code 1/An internal error occurred or Reason Code 66/The user attempted to use an authentication method that is not enabled on the matching network policy. The NPS server admins insist that it's configured correctly and claim that since eapol_test authenticates to it the problem is at our end. Whatever NPS is doing it's quite weird and required reverse-engineering wpa_supplicant to figure out, for example it sends back an undocumented vendor-specific EAP request (vendor ID = 311/Microsoft, vendor type = 34, data = 00 00 00 01) when we're expecting an MSCHAPv2 Challenge while FreeRADIUS behaves as expected. At the moment we're stuck with finger-pointing, from our point of view whatever NPS is doing isn't anything like what the spec says and things work fine with FreeRADIUS so NPS is broken, from their point of view eapol_test works with NPS and so there's something wrong with our client. If this situation is ringing any bells with someone I'd be interested in any information we can use to move forward, and can provide more details on any part of the PEAP exchange if required. JG.

Setting the standards
by Alan DeKok 13 Jul '21

13 Jul '21

After some "behind the scenes" wrangling, we've managed to get some new values defined for Acct-Status-Type. These values are especially useful to vendors who have one RADIUS client which controls multiple subsystems. i.e. a WiFI Access Point, where all of the RADIUS packets come from the controller, but each individual radio may have many users. If the radio reboots while the controller is still up, there was no way in RADIUS for the controller to signal that. It would have to send multiple accounting packets, one for each user on that controller. With the new values defined, the controller can just say "subsystem 1 stopped". The new values are defined here: https://www.iana.org/assignments/radius-types/radius-types.xhtml#radius-typ… A longer discussion of the issue is on the main FreeRADIUS page: https://freeradius.org/rfc/acct_status_type_subsystem.html I encourage people to forward these links to vendors, so that vendors can start implementing this new functionality. Alan DeKok.

Problem with Anonymous Identity
by Vincent 珉 Hua 华 11 Jul '21

11 Jul '21

Hi fellow FreeRADIUS users, I ran into a problem with the Anonymous Identity. We are on FreeRADIUS v.3.0.19 with MYSQL. When Anonymous Identity is configured on the client for PEAP authentication, it will fail. Server log (please see below) shows that the RADIUS service didn’t use the real username when comparing the username and password. Instead, the Anonymous Identity was used to compare against the database which caused the authentication to fail. However, if we do not use the Anonymous Identity, then it will pass. Does anyone know how to authenticate with Anonymous Identity configured? I have a portion of the log below for your reference. “aIdentity” is the configured Anonymous Identity and “test” is the real username. Thanks in advance! Any help or hint would be greatly appreciated! ** Why you should run your RADIUS server in a VM --------------------------------------------- Your network can go down for really simple reasons. A junior system admin might inadvertently type the wrong thing into a command line, or a minor upgrade can break some obscure dependency between libraries resulting in a cascading set of errors that bring the network down. When your infrastructure stops working, (and it will, you just don’t know when), it is critical to fix it quickly. Fortunately, there is a very easy, simple, and cheap way to design your infrastructure in anticipation of possible catastrophe. In fact, it’s easier, simpler, and cheaper than the alternatives!
