Hello,
Are the default values in the LDAP module configuration already suitable
for an infrastructure with at least 700 users, or should I adjust these
values? Is there any calculation to be done for this adjustment?
- CPU usage 2.12% of 2 CPU(s)
- Memory usage 23.83% (976.02 MiB of 4.00 GiB)
- FreeRADIUS server version 3.2.3
- We have 3 Active Directory servers in our infrastructure
- I configured 3 entries in the LDAP module
*mods-enabled > ldap*
ldap ad1 {
...
}
ldap ad2 {
...
}
ldap ad3 {
...
}
*sites-enabled > default*
authorize {
redundant-load-balance {
ad1
ad2
ad3
}
eap {
ok = return
}
}
I apologize if this type of question shouldn't be posted here.

Hello,
I tried to define realms in proxy.conf in following way:
realm $ENV{DOMAIN_NAME} {
}
realm $ENV{NETBIOS_NAME} {
}
but FreeRADIUS shows error during the start :
etc/raddb/proxy.conf[7]: Parse error after "DOMAIN_NAME": unexpected token "}"
Does FreeRADIUS support environmental variables ?
Thanks,
Andrei

Hi all, I need to configure my client's FreeRadius to allow connection
to the WiFi network only to specific smartphones.
I can establish EAP-PWD connection but the MAC address list of
authorized devices isn't checked so connection works for every device.
Here the debug log; could someone point me to what is wrong?
(Please note that the use of EAP-PWD is mandatory)
Thanks,
Dario Barbon

I'm working to setup a FreeRADIUS server to authenticate our users for Wifi
connectivity. I've read a bunch of documentation and followed many
different guides, but things aren't coming together.
On the FR server when I run radtest, I'm seeing the following:
radtest brian.testing(a)digitalturbine.com <redacted> localhost 1812
testing123
Sent Access-Request Id 212 from 0.0.0.0:47042 to 127.0.0.1:1812 length 102

User-Password = "<redacted>"
NAS-IP-Address = 10.255.1.105
NAS-Port = 1812
Message-Authenticator = 0x00

Received Access-Reject Id 212 from 127.0.0.1:1812 to 127.0.0.1:47042 length

Obviously something must not be right in my configuration. If I go to the
freeradius -X screen I see the following:

First thing I see is "Looking up Realm" and "No such Realm." I have not
defined realm anywhere as the documentation points to this being needed for
Proxy and I'm not using a proxy.
Next I'm seeing a lot of "ber_get_next failed, errno=11" errors with the
rtm_ldap. I do eventually see the "bind successful" message.
Then comes the following:
(1) ldap: WARNING: Search failed: Can't contact LDAP server. Got new
socket, retrying...
(1) ldap: Waiting for search result...
(1) ldap: ERROR: Failed performing search: Unknown error
rlm_ldap (ldap): Released connection (0)
Not sure why it can't connect to LDAP server or why the search is failing.
An ldapsearch at the command line does connect to the LDAP server and will
show me info:

I'd like to log failed proxied authentication attempts (missing responses) and some information to identify which remote server did not respond.
I've successfully configured a linelog module and Post-Proxy-Type Fail-Authentication section to log a message when no response is received but am struggling to find any way of including in the log message information that will identify (eg. IP address/port or home server name) the remote server that failed to respond.
I've found the Home-Server-Name attribute in the internal dictionary but when I try to use it in the format string in the linelog module it just expands to an empty string which ever attribute list I reference.
eg :
format = "Missing response for %{User-Name} to %{realm} vs:'%{Virtual-Server}' home server:'%{control:Home-Server-Name}''"
results in a log line of:
Missing response for 'my_realm/username' to 'my_realm' vs:'my-realm-server-auth' hsn:''
Is there some attributes/means of including some information identifying the remote server in the log message?
Thanks,
Paul

Hi everyone, hope you are well !
I'm currently trying to update a freeradius server from V2 to V3, and I'm
struggling with tagged attributes that don't work correctly on the V3
server.
This is what i have in my radreply table :
+----------+-------------------------------------+------------------------+----+---------------------------+
| id | UserName | Attribute |
op | Value |
+----------+-------------------------------------+------------------------+----+---------------------------+
| 35928801 | userXX | Framed-Protocol | = |
PPP |
| 35928811 | userXX | Service-Type | = | Framed-User
|
| 35928821 | userXX | Tunnel-Server-Auth-Id | = | :1:xxxxxxxxxx |
| 35928831 | userXX | Tunnel-Server-Endpoint | = | :1:xx.xx.xx.xx |
| 35928841 | userXX | Tunnel-Medium-Type | = | IP |
| 35928851 | userXX | Tunnel-Type | = |
:1:L2TP |
| 35928861 | userXX | Tunnel-Client-Auth-ID | = | :1:XX_XXX |
| 35928901 |userXX | Tunnel-Password | = | :1:xxxxxx
In the V2 server, the response is like this :
Packet-Type = Access-Accept
Framed-Protocol = PPP
Service-Type = Framed-User
Tunnel-Server-Auth-Id:1 = "xxxxxx"
Tunnel-Server-Endpoint:1 = "xx.xx.xx.xx"
Tunnel-Medium-Type:1 = IPv4
Tunnel-Type:1 = L2TP
Tunnel-Client-Auth-Id:1 = "xx_XXX"
Tunnel-Password:1 = "xxxxx"
As you can see, the ":1:" contained in the value goes at the end of the
attribute.
I spent a lot of time trying to understand this on the V2 server, but I
found nothing related to this configuration.
It's like freeradiusV2 understands itself how to deal with tagged attributs.
On the V3 server, it respond exactly what is on the radreply table :
Packet-Type = Access-Accept
Framed-Protocol = PPP
Service-Type = Framed-User
Tunnel-Server-Auth-Id = ":1:xxxxxxxx"
Tunnel-Server-Endpoint = ":1:xx.xx.xx.xxx"
Tunnel-Medium-Type = IPv4
Tunnel-Type = L2TP
Tunnel-Client-Auth-Id = ":1:xxxxxxx"
Tunnel-Password = ":1:xxxxxx"
For now, i can't change nothing on my bdd, i have do deal it with freeradius
I found nothing about changes between V2 and V3 about tagged attributes (i
found something between v3 and v4)
Do you have an idea, how can I make it work with V3 ?
Regards,
Kabsof

I'm in the process of configuring FreeRADIUS to integrate with our
Okta SSO and LDAP. I'm working through the documentation and FR
installed and LDAP configured so far.
Right now I'm looking at the "Controlling user accounts" info and had
a question about the user.access_attribute and the
user.access-positive attributes.In the documentation it mentions if
the attribute is present (set to true) I can set the access_positive =
yes.
My question is this... in Okta the attribute is "organizationalStatus"
and it can be one of several things. For an active user it is set to
ACTIVE. Does FR only see true or false? Can I set this so it sees the
attribute from Okta and if it is anything other than ACTIVE, then set
access_positive = no?
Thanks

Azure AD LDAP / memberOf / Not all groups being assigned to control:LDAP-Group

Hello,
Freeradius info:
freeradius -v
radiusd: FreeRADIUS Version 3.0.20, for host x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, built on

FreeRADIUS Version 3.0.20
more /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=20.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=focal
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS"
I've been using pfSense + OpenVPN + FreeRadius, using an Azure AD LDAP
backend successfully for quite a while now. This morning I had a user
reach out to let me know they are unable to access specific resources via
the OpenVPN client. As part of the post-auth, I am creating a Cisco-AVPair
to dynamically create rules in pf, this is (was?) working as expected.
What I discovered after some digging is that the 'control:LDAP-Group'
variable is not being assigned all the groups the user is a member of.
Since some groups are missing from the result, some of the post-auth group
checks are never hit, so the firewall rule is not being added to the
Cisco-AVPair
ex:
I have the following in the 'ldap' module
server = 'ldaps://ldaps.domain.com'
identity = '<username>@domain.com'
password = '<password>'
base_dn = 'dc=domain,dc=com'
If I do an ldapsearch for the user using the variables above:
ldapsearch -D '$identiry' -w '$password -H '$server' -b '$base_dn'
'(&(objectClass=user)(sAMAccountName=<username>))' memberOf | grep
^memberOf | wc -l
The command returns 112 groups for the user I have queried.
When I run 'freeradius -f -XXX', and monitor the output for the above users
login, the number of groups assigned to control:LDAP-Group is only 65.
I have a different user who is a member of 70 groups, testing with that
user I see the same result from the 'freeradius -f -XXX' output for this
user as well, only 65 groups.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a knob I have to tune somewhere
that I am unaware of?
Thanks,
Mike

First time poster here, so bare with me.
I've been using MS NPS for our WiFi authentication against AD.
However, the company I work for is moving away from AD and going to
Okta for all our directory needs and SSO.
Okta supports RADIUS from a handful of proprietary systems. None of
which we have. We are using Unifi APs for our WiFi. As is typically
the case, I have ZERO budget for this. So, implementing an online
proprietary system at $X/user/month isn't possible, all though much
easier.
So, I spun up a new Ubuntu VM and installed FreeRADIUS. I've already
got the Okta LDAP Interface created and working. I've used it with
both Jamf and ldapsearch. That piece seems to be working at this time.
I have followed various instructions online and have FreeRADIUS up and
working using a test user in the local sql db.
Now the part of integrating it with Okta. I have searched all over for
information on configuring FreeRADIUS with Okta and I've found very
little. Okta does have a RADIUS agent for linux, but from my install
and attempt to configure that I've found it lacking many features.
Following what documentation I could find I have modified the ldap
file and linked it to /mods-enabled/ldap. In the ldap { section I've
modified the following:
server
identity
password
base_dn
I've also made the necessary changes in the user and group sections.
In the tls section I've changed start_tls = yes and specified the
ca_file.
Now I can't even get freeradius -X to start. I get the following when
running that:
/etc/freeradius/3.0/mods-enabled/ldap[8]: ldaps:// scheme is not
compatible with 'start_tls'
/etc/freeradius/3.0/mods-enabled/ldap[8]: Instantiation failed for module
"ldap"
If I change start_tls to no, I get the following:
TLS: can't connect: (unknown error code).
rlm_ldap (ldap): Bind with uid=<redacted>, dc=com to
ldaps://redacted.ldap.okta.com:636 failed: Can't contact LDAP server
rlm_ldap (ldap): Opening connection failed (0)
rlm_ldap (ldap): Removing connection pool
/etc/freeradius/3.0/mods-enabled/ldap[8]: Instantiation failed for module
"ldap"
One thing to mention here is when doing an ldapsearch using the following:
ldapsearch -x -H ldaps://digitalturbine.ldap.okta.com -D
"uid=<redacted>,dc=com" -W -b dc=redacted,dc=okta,dc=com
uid=<username>
I get results.
This is of course using simple auth (-x), so I'm not having to use the
cert for this and Jamf appears to be doing simple auth as well. Which
appears to be the issue at this point.
How do I configure FreeRADIUS ldap to do simple auth in this case?
Must be something I'm missing in the ldap file, but can't put my
finger on it.
Once I get FR talking to the Okta LDAP instance I can move on to the
other pieces I need to figure out how to configure - auth based on
group membership, different sites etc.
Any suggestions?
Thanks, brian
